Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub
Advantages: Tastes and smells gorgeous, works to keep my lips free of flakey skin, provides a smooth base
Disadvantages: None really, would be nice if it were a little more moisturising
I remember the first time I bought a pot of Bubblegum Lip Scrub, it can't have been long after the launch as there were small pyramids of them dotted all round the shop and various displays documenting its creation. Marketeers dream, I had to buy a pot because a) it was so prettily pink and b) the staff in Lush were so incredibly enthusiastic. I didn't even use it straightaway and after finding it in the bathroom a few weeks later thought I'd give it a go - and I have used it practically every single day ever since. I had a brief flirtation with a chocolate flavoured Lush scrub recently but it just didn't have the yumminess of Bubblegum and I didn't even finish the pot before replacing it with my favourite girly pink scrub.
This scrub is such a clever and simple idea; caster sugar mixed with organic jojoba oil and Methyl Ionone, which is derived from essential oil to add fragrance to cosmetics. These are all naturally occurring ingredients and have been carefully chosen and blended to create the lovely Bubblegum scrub - Lush have added a flavour and two colours from their 'safe synthetics' list, but really you couldn't create this colour and taste without using *something* that doesn't occur in the natural world!
As Mark puts it, you're paying £4.95 for a tiny (25g) pot of flavoured sugar. Obviously, being a man who has never used so much as a lip balm let alone something to scrub his lips nice and smooth, he would say that. Myself, I think it's a bit of a wonder product. When I first started using it I had never heard of such a thing as a lip scrub so was curious, but being a product based on simple sugar I wasn't really expecting too much - I remember looking at my slightly chapped lips after I used the Bubblegum lip scrub for the first time and being impressed by how smooth they looked, I doubt if my love affair would have blossomed if it hadn't sorted out this minor problem so quickly so I'm really glad it did!
Continued use has left my lips looking healthy and well looked after, the scrub aspect is fabulous but there is little in the way of moisturisation provided after use. I counter this by using the scrub and following this with a slick of lip balm for soft and ultra smooth skin on my lips - the Bubblegum scrub was developed by Lush technicians who were looking for something to create a smooth base to apply their lipstick over, and they succeeded with this! I'm a complete lipstick junkie and wear it most days, the thing is you can apply your lipstick with the precision of a make-up artist but if you have bits of flakey skin on your lips it'll never look perfect. Bubblegum will rid you of any flakes, chapped appearances and even has the added bonus of giving your lips a natural pinkness that not only looks healthy but lasts for a while too. In the olden days (when lipstick was expensive and full of lead) women would pinch their lips and cheeks to create an attractive glow - this is the 21st century equivalent and looks fantastic as part of a natural look.
The taste is delicious, Lush have engineered the lip scrub to be not only very tasty but also safe to ingest. It has that sweet and synthetic bubblegum flavour that I remember from the old Anglo bubblies, it's such an amazingly authentic bubblegum taste that you'd definitely be able to pick it out in a blind test and the main reason I couldn't take to the less natural chocolate flavoured scrub I purchased recently. At one point the label used to urge you to lick your lips after using the scrub but Lush seem to have phased that recommendation out now and you're simply advised that it's 'safe' - I love to lick the loose sugar from my lips, although wouldn't want to eat too much of it as it's delicious but there is a hint of something (maybe the jojoba, maybe just a byproduct of the flavouring) that gives it a bit of an odd aftertaste if you're accidentally or otherwise too heavy handed with the sugar.
I think you've probably guessed that I adore this wonderful lip scrub. The small pot lasts for ages as you literally only need to use enough to cover the tip of your finger per application, I'd guesstimate each pot will last me for at least two months and maybe more. I tend to use it in the morning as that's when I apply my make-up but it can be used at any time of day really, if my lips are playing up I'll sometimes use it twice a day but any more than that and it can make my lips a bit sore. Despite the fact that it's made with sugar there's no residue left on my lips after use, I follow the old directions of licking my lips after scrubbing them - by the time I'm sick of the bubblegum flavour it's all gone anyway! Perfect!
Summary: Solving a problem I didn't realise I had!
