Advantages: Fruity fragrances, provide shine and gloss.
Disadvantages: Not protective enough in wintery conditions.
This review is about the Born Lippy Pots of Lip Balm rather than the sticks. I recently bought myself the Christmas gift set of Born Lippy Fruity Lip Balms which is a set of five lip balms wrapped in the shape of a lollipop. Individually these sell at £2 and the gift set is £10 so the price works out the same (although you can get the WATERMELON flavour in a 15ml pot for £2 too). I was attracted to the set because I'm a lip balm addict. I always feel like my lips are dry when I am not using a lip balm or a gloss to moisten them. I liked the sound of these fruit fragranced Bodyshop lip balms and I also like shopping at the Bodyshop because of their ethical stance on Fairtrade as well as the fact they don't test on animals.
Each balm is 10mls in size and comes in a plastic pot with a screw off top. They have their full ingredients listed on a label on the bottom of the pot. Each lip balm shares the fact that they are quite soft and gel like. They melt easily when your warm finger touches them and this makes them easy to apply. They all provide the same amount of coverage. I would say they are similar to a jelly style lip gloss. They provide a look of glossiness and shine but they are not as long lasting on the lips as a harder, more waxy lip balm. They feel slippy on the lips and you can instantly tell when it is starting to wear off. I like the way the balms feel on my lips although they are not the perfect winter lip balm as they don't provide enough protection against the elements. They can colour the lips slightly and in the case of the Satsuma Shimmer variety provide some glitter.
My favourite balm of the set is the STRAWBERRY balm. It's a bright cherry red colour and has a sheer, glossy look on the lips. It has a strong scent of sugary strawberry. It does smell rather artificial but it's so sweet and delicious I like it! To me it has the most pleasing fragrance and colour.
The RASPBERRY balm is second favourite and is similar in colour to the strawberry balm but perhaps is a more intense, dramatic cerise. The raspberry fragrance smells like a mix of raspberry and cranberry juices and is very sweet and girly. Again, the colour on the lips is so that it enhances natural lips without making them look too extreme. An easy option when you are out and about and need to slap on some protection without needing lips to be perfectly filled in with colour.
The WATERMELON balm also has a lovely fragrance but is milder than the first two I've mentioned. In fact I'd describe the fragrance as being natural and like a blend of watermelon and vanilla. Again it's a sugary sweet scent but this time it is watered down. It reminds me of the scent of a sweetshop. The colour of the balm is pale pink so it does not really colour the lips in any way.
SATSUMA SHIMMER is a bright orange balm which has a fine gold sparkle to it. It's a more glamorous option as it can brighten up your face and be worn as a serious gloss. You can also put this over lip sticks as you can with all of the balms but this one looks great over orange coloured lipstick colours as it enchances shine and then adds that party sparkle too. The balm has a tangy fragrance of fresh juicy oranges- delicious and it's so strong you can smell it all the time when it's on your lips!
Finally the PASSIONBERRY balm. This is a dark purple balm and it smells rather like blackcurrent ribena. The
scent is a little too sickly sweet for my liking and reminds me of cough syrups and lozenges. I do like the intense deep shade of the balm though.
I am happy with my lip balm set so far and feel that they provide a medium amount of protection against dryness and the elements. As fashion glosses they are very good especially the Satsuma Shimmer. I would buy a set of these again and would love to get these as a gift too. If I was to buy one individually I would opt for the STRAWBERRY version. At the moment I tend to use these quite frequently when I'm out and about as the cold weather dries my lips out. They are easy to carry around in your handbag though as they are small and light. Their protection lasts longer in an indoor environment.
Summary: Enjoyable to use but prepare to do so frequently if you have very dry lips.
