Advantages: Highly effective at moisturising and adding gloss to lips
Disadvantages: The rosy lip tint is very subtle
Vaseline Rosy Lips is a petroleum jelly lip salve the likes of which has become synonymous with Vaseline. What makes this one different is it comes with extracts of rose and almond oil. It promises to provide 'therapy' to lips at the same time as gently tinting them.
The Packaging
Vaseline Rosy Lips comes in a small circular 20g tin like so many of Vaseline's lip salves do these days.
This tin is a peachy pink in colour with splashes of contrasting white. The lid is half pink and half white so that the lettering on the pink half is white and the lettering on the white part is pink. The remainder of the tin, including the base, is pink.
The lid carries the brand name Vaseline in bold white letters in the centre, with 'lip therapy with rose and almond oil' across the top and 'Petroleum Jelly Rosy Lips' at the bottom.
On the base of the product is a list of ingredients.
If you turn the tin to the side you spot for the first time the promise it will gently tint and care for lips. I think there is a reason the 'gently tints' element of the product promise is hidden to the side of the tin. More of that in the next section.
My Experience
The little tin comes open with a twist and pull of the lid. Inside is revealed a pinky red coloured petroleum jelly. I was surprised at the redness of it as the outside container is much more subtly coloured. The lip salve looks shiny and inviting.
I find I don't need much of the balm to coat my lips. Just a little rub of my finger on the surface of the balm for a couple of seconds gets me enough product for one use.
When I apply it to my lips it is silky and smooth and not greasy. My lips feel nourished and glossy instantly and nicely pampered. After a few seconds I then start to taste the rose oil in my mouth. This is not unpleasant though it is quite a perfumed taste, different to the usual fruity lip balms I tend to use.
I cannot detect the almond oil. I suppose that is doing more of the work behind the scenes moisturising the lips.
The promised rosy tint is very subtle - barely there. That is why I think Vaseline has put almost a disclaimer on the side of the tin stating it will 'gently' tint the lips. It is covering itself for protestations that lips are not being given more of a dramatic colour, I would imagine.
My lips are naturally quite pinky red in colour so I find it hard to spot too much of a colour change with this product, however my lips look nice and shimmery and slightly pinker in colour.
I would imagine in all users it will just pinken up the natural colour of your lips but not alter the colour in any significant way.
It is far more subtle than a lip gloss so is nice for a natural look but to be honest I would have liked a bit more of a tint from this product as that is why I bought it over the original Vaseline petroleum jelly.
Long term I find with using this product my lips feel healthy and well conditioned and free of any dryness. The weather is quite warm at the time of writing this review but I can imagine this lip balm will be very useful for chapped lips in the winter. Vaseline Rosy Lips has therefore not lost any of Vaseline's lip caring properties in adding a tinting element to the product.
My Conclusion
Vaseline Rosy Lips is a highly effective lip salve for moisturising and conditioning lips and used long term will radically improve lip health. The rose oil leaves a pleasant floral taste in the mouth and an added touch of luxury and interest to the product. I wouldn't as a potential purchaser of this product put too much store in the rosy lips element of the lip balm. It will leave lips shiny and glossy with a touch of pink but in a highly subtle and natural way, rather than staining the lips like a gloss.
I would buy it again over the original Vaseline lip salve as the little colour it does add to lips is a nice bonus but I will still have to buy a separate lip gloss to add any kind of real colour.
