Baileys Irish Cream
Advantages: Delicious taste
Disadvantages: High calorie content
I'm fond of a drink or two every now and then, and have a wide-ranging taste in alcohol, from wine and spirits to alcopops and real ale. I tend to drink different things during different seasons and on different occasions. Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur is something I enjoy at home by myself, usually on a cold winter's evening.
Baileys comes in a standard black bottle which is more curved and rounded than most liqueur bottles. It has a label with the name of the product and a picture of the Irish countryside.
Baileys is a mixture of Irish whiskey and cream and contains 17% alcohol. Because of the cream, it has a comparatively short shelf life of 30 months, but this is never a problem for me as I never have a bottle lying around for more than five or six months! The drink should be stored at a moderate temperature of between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius and does not contain preservatives as the alcohol content preserves the cream.
Baileys is a pale brown liquid that has a sweet alcoholic scent. It doesn't look as immediately appetising as some drinks I've seen, but long familiarity has made it very appealing to me!
I love the taste of Baileys - it is rich and creamy with a sweet taste that really satisfies my sweet tooth. It tastes strongly of alcohol but the cream prevents this from hitting too hard. Baileys is full of calories, with 5.7g of fat and 144 calories per 43g (1.5oz) serving, but as I only have one or two glasses at a time (sometimes instead of a dessert, sometimes alone) this isn't too much of a problem for me. It's definitely a drink to be enjoyed in moderation, not something to be knocked back on a big night out!
I usually drink Baileys alone in a short glass, either with or without ice. I prefer to drink it during the colder weather as I find it indulgent and warming. I also enjoy it in hot chocolate or Horlicks before bed (in moderation of course!) Baileys works very well in creamy cocktails - there is a bar in York called Evil Eye that makes a delicious cocktail with Baileys, vodka, ice cream and banana. It can also be added to cakes and desserts, and a small amount goes well over ice cream.
Baileys has been made into chocolate, which is very tasty. There are also other varieties of the drink available such as coffee, hazelnut and mint.
***Price and Availability***
Baileys is widely available from supermarkets, off-licences and pretty much anywhere that sells alcohol. It can also be obtained from pubs and several restaurants. Many cheaper versions of cream liqueur are also available, though these vary in quality.
Baileys is normally priced at around £13 for 70cl which is pretty much standard for branded liqueurs and spirits. Smaller and larger bottles are also available, even tiny one-shot bottles which are ideal for (adult) Christmas stockings. The drink is often available on special offer in supermarkets, particularly around Christmas time.
I love Baileys: it is one of my favourite drinks, very tasty and incredibly versatile. It brightens up the cold winter evenings and is a very festive drink. Five stars from me!
