Baileys Irish Cream
Advantages: Lovely creamy alcoholic drink
Wow, according to their website, "Over 2,300 glasses of Baileys are consumed every minute of every day." That is a lot of drinking but I can see why, Baileys is pure luxury in a glass and one of my favourite tipples. As we get nearer to Christmas I always think about a nice glass of Baileys again, I don't know what it is about this time of year, I think when I first tried it many years ago it was at a Christmas party and is always the nicest time for me to drink it and so I am looking forward to lots more after dinner glasses of Baileys.
According to their website, "Baileys is a perfect marriage of fresh, premium quality Irish dairy cream, finest spirits, Irish whiskey and a proprietary recipe of chocolate flavours." Baileys is definitely wonderful and creamy and its almost like drinking a creamy dessert which is why I often like to have one after food. It has a creamy brown colour to it and is quite thick. I wouldn't really say that it has an overpowering chocolate taste, its definitely not like a hot chocolate drink or anything like that but you definitely get a lot of sweetness from the drink. You also get a very alcoholic taste from a Baileys too. It definitely has a kick to it, you have the first lovely creamy mouthful and then afterwards its like pow, a very strong whiskey alcohol aftertaste but it doesn't make you shiver, it sort of warms you up which is nice. Baileys is 17% alcohol by volume so thats why you get quick a kick from it.
I think the best way to drink a Baileys is in a nice rounded glass with lots of ice so its nice and crisp and cold. Its not a drink that you can drink lots of at any one time and I think this is down to the creaminess but you can definitely drink a few in one sitting as they go down very easily.
Baileys is definitely an Irish drink as its full name is Baileys Irish cream. According to their website, "over 75% of the raw ingredients and packaging used to make and present Baileys is sourced from the island of Ireland. The cream is fresh dairy cream that comes from pasture fed cows in Ireland. The whiskey is Irish whiskey supplied from a number of distilleries including The Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim. Apparently over 220 million litres of fresh Irish milk are required annually to produce the fresh cream used in the manufacture of Baileys." So you see its definitely a very Irish drink.
I have always found Baileys to be an excellent quality alcoholic drink and one I love to enjoy at Christmas. Currently Sainsburys are selling a 1 litre bottle for £20.
