Baileys Irish Cream

Baileys Irish Cream
Advantages: Lovely taste
Disadvantages: Can be a bit sickly if too much is drunk at one time.
Baileys is one of the few alcoholic drinks I will drink at home and as a result I always get at least a bottle and very often a few boxes of Baileys flavoured chocolates at Christmas. I have tried a few of the flavoured ones - mint and crème caramel and while they are nice for the odd drink, I still prefer the original.
It is a drink that you can't drink too much of in one sitting as it can get a bit sickly, but one or two are really nice. I have had it on its own, just with ice and on one very drunken boat trip back from Hamburg with brandy.
It does not really taste alcoholic so it can be surprising to realise that there is 17% alcohol in it. It is easy to drink a couple of glasses without realising that you have topped up the alcohol level but it is made very clear on the bottle.
It is an Irish liqueur as the name suggests but I recently found out that there is not actually someone called Bailey who has this named after them. The name comes from the Baileys Hotel in London, and the signature that appears on each bottle is fake.
Once opened the bottle lasts for quite a while and I have drunk the remainder of a bottle that has been open for well over 6 months. It is claimed that it is OK for up to two and a half years even if open but I must admit that I would not risk drinking a product that contains cream so long after it was opened. It also contains vegetable oil and I try not to think of this when I have a glass.
The Irish manufacturers have been producing Baileys for more than 30 years and a few other flavours have been added - mint, cream caramel and hazelnut among others.
The manufacturers provide this as their nutritional values:-
Values per 100 ml Baileys:
Energy 323 calories
This may seem to be a lot but considering only a small amount is drunk at a time it is not that much of a problem.
Fat content 14g
Most supermarkets have an offer on Baileys around Christmas and at present Tesco are selling it for £16 for a litre bottle.
Summary: I always like to have a bottle in.
