The taste of the Caribbean
Member Name: aylawarner
Advantages: Sweet, fruity and tropical
Disadvantages: None for me
The main type of alcohol that I drink is spirits and Malibu has always been at the very top of my favourites list.
Malibu is a white rum drink that is made with natural coconut extract. It's made in the Caribbean and the entire drink, from the palm tree design on the bottle to the coconut taste of it, is very exotic, tropical and summery. This is a very sweet drink and a lot of people don't like it as it is an acquired taste. The coconut flavour is very strong but it's a fruity and very sweet coconut taste.
I used to drink this with pineapple juice as then the entire drink was very fruity and the two tropical flavours suited each other really well. That is a little bit sickly though and one or two glasses was always enough for me. A few years ago though I tried it with coke, thinking that it wouldn't be that nice, but I'm so glad I did try it as it's still my favourite drink today. It's the only drink that I actually have whatever the situation and I very rarely choose a different alcoholic drink.
The mixture of Malibu and coke is just so divine even though I wouldn't have thought that coke and coconut went at all well together. I can drink plenty of these (and do on a night out!) without them getting at all boring or unoriginal. The only thing I do notice after drinking quite a few of these is that I do sometimes start to feel a little sick - and I don't mean sick from too much alcohol, I mean a kind of sickly feeling because the drink is so sweet. Although that may be from the fizziness of the coke though. Also, whether this is due to the drink or maybe because I'm just lucky, I never seem to get hungover whenever I've drunk this on a night out.
It has a 21.0% alcohol content but it's not the sort of alcohol that tastes too strong if you have too much of it at once. I often have double mixers with Malibu and, whereas some alcoholic drinks taste far too strong and disgusting in a double, this isn't one of them.
The drink now comes in a few different tropical flavours including banana, mango, passion fruit and pineapple. I'm not sure that these would suit being part of a mixer but I can imagine them being good as a shot or in a cocktail.
A bottle of Malibu in shops is similar in price to other spirits such as Vodka and Archers - usually around £14 a bottle. In pubs and bars, it's not too expensive either and, again, cost around the same amount as a Vodka mixer.
If you like the sweet taste of coconut then Malibu is definitely a drink you should try. It's fruity, sweet and different and is perfect to make a drink or cocktail taste like a tropical Caribbean island!
Summary: Malibu and coke - my favourite alcoholic drink. Ooh, I'm craving one now!
