Advantages: More money left for the goverment for projects like the Dome

Disadvantages: Huge, no Massive debts left for students

I was one of the last lucky students who went to university backed up by my LEA grant.
I do know that if i was going to university today there would be no way that i would have been able to get a Degree. I didn`t spend all of my money on drink and fags as most people think that students do. I must admit there were a few drunken nights, and generally I did have a good time but thats part of student life, and makes you the person you are when you leave.
I came from a typical working class family and even then the grants weren`t massive. I couldn`t really ask my parents for more money so the only option I did have when things started to get tight was to pay a visit to the university loans rep.
Before i knew it i had been given my maximum loan and a huge chunk of money was sitting in my bank account.
I was told i wouldn`t have to pay it back until i was earning a certain amount and there is no intrest on it.
This all fair, but the bottom line is you do have to pay it back some day. And inflation is about 3% which does amount to a few hundred pounds over the time you finish uni.
At the time i got th loan i thought no problem i`ll be able to pay that back in my first wage. You never account for living cost when you actually hit the real world. I took out two loans i i find them a real pain to pay back.
I feel real sorry for those who have to take out the maximum loans today as they are huge. I`m sure they are going to take many years to pay back in some cases.
My real problem is with this so called peoples government. I must admit i did vote for them. I would imagine that most of them went to uni on grants awarded to them. I have to ask the question why are they not giving students the same chance they had in life. Maybe if they had channelled the £800m that was initially earmarked for the Dome there would never have been this problem today of higher education funding gone completely up the wall !!

I agree completely that student funding should come from the government.
Governmen t should look further forward than the 5 years they expect office.

Already there is a shortage of skilled labour in the electronics industry, with some firms funding students in higher education.

Surely it makes sense to educate your people to the highest possible standard. I believe there was talk of PAYING people to stay on at school!! What madness is it that would not support the educationally elite!(students who want to get qualifications) and try to keep the medicre
masses in school!
What about this system:
If a graduted student stays in the UK the amount of TAX they pay over a number of years should recover their training cost. If the graduate opts to leave the UK soon after ending their training then they would have to pay back the balance of their training costs.
