I'm a final year student in Liverpool, I left home and live here all year round. My parents earn the amount at which I have to pay all my tuition fees unaided. So my parents pay my rent for me (bless them!!) and I have to pay everything else. I would like to know why Student Loans are, (stress: in MY opinion) so stupid?! I received £1065.00 to last me from September 11th to January 30th, having to pay £500 in tuition fees and all the rest. So, hum, that leaves me with £565 to live on for four months? Hello..logic?! I'm now half way through my first term and coming very close to my limit. Next week I will probably get a letter from the bank..rah rah..I'm sure fellow students know the drill. Being in my final year, my loan has dropped my £500 or so. I couldn't manage last year so what do they expect now? I'm so annoyed. How do they think we can live on this? The average cost of university is currently £7000/year. So why oh why am I only allowed to borrow £2000? I just don't get it. I'm at a loss. And if anyone has any ideas on how I can borrow more money please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice from all of you, its nice to know that people do care about students, and its not just me.

As one who graduated in 1966 ("The good old days" - and they were, believe you me !) I can only sympathise with you, annette14. The added stress is something that you don't need, particularly in your final year. Our two daughters graduated this year, but fortunately we had planned well in advance and were able to afford to finance them thorugh without then running into financial problems. As a result they were each able to concentrate on the job in hand, to get a good degree and a career to follow.

At least in Scotland, they have abolished tuition fees, so that we had to pay for our son only for one year.

TRhe whole question of student finance is a dispgrace. The probelm is that the graet majority of the great British Public operate on a "Pull the Ladder up Jack ! I'm alright!" basis and prefer lower taxes than to foster the creation of better, less-stressed graduates. To suggest bringing in student grants at the same level as we enjoyed in the sixties would be political suicide for any party.

But, it may not be for the tuition fees to be abolished, as they have been in Scotland. I suggest that you and your friends write to your local MP and to the Liberal Democrat candidate for the next election. You never know !

I'll assume you've already got an overdraft on your student account, so I don't know what else to suggest, to be honest. If you're in your last year you're obviously going to have enough on your plate without getting a part time job too. As for students having it easy, in the early eighties maybe that was true, but I wouldn't want to be a student nowadays!
