Advantages: It just about pays for your accommodation and tutition fees

Disadvantages: It's not enough, the system is not fair

So today I got the next installment of my student loan. Hooray just enough to pay off my overdraft. For the first time in ages my balance will be a plus figure.
I would personally like to speak to the person who decides how much people get whilst studying at university. People may say students spend all their time at the pub drinking to their hearts content, and eating take away all the time. Well I have news for you. I cannot even afford to go out, I cannot get a job as my degree is too demanding.
Last year I got approx £2700. My outgoings for the year where £1025 tuition fees, £1800 approx for accommodation. Already this covers my loan, infact it puts me in my overdraft. This is without food. I think it is stupid that the smaller the loan you get the more tuition fees you have to pay. I know people who are living at home and getting more than me. Luckily my parents contribute to my accommodation but still I am absolutely skint.
Fair enough, this money helps and without it things would be impossible but we have to pay it back, it's not like we get it given to us. I think every student should be entitled to the same amount whatever their parents are on. A lot of parents are not willing to contribute anyway.
I spent all last summer working as many hours I could get in and even spent 3 weeks in a salad factory, sweating over lettuce leaves. I am in my second year at the minute and it's really getting me down. I am behind students who quit for financial reasons 100%.
When i come out of uni I am hoping to move into a house with my fiance. I am not going to have no money what so ever, so I don't think my luck will be in.
The government are trying to encourage more doctors and more teachers, but what do they expect when the costs of living at university are so great.

When the future of the country is dependent on the young people who're at university now it does seem unreasonable that they should end up in debt.

AS a mature student I have found quitting work to go to Uni
more difficut than I first believed. You incur debt over the
years and when you have a family to help support too, it's hard.
Luckily my wife works (hard!) but the loan system is blatently
unfair. As oddgal says, we pay it back anyway, so the option of
extra help should be more readily available. Yes I know hardship
funds are available but I certainly hate to rely on handouts.
Luckily I had no tuition fees to pay this year (year 1) but who's
to say that the goalposts don't move next year leaving me with no
option to pay up or drop out. Who's then up sh*t creek without a
paddle?

I agree totally....we pay it back anyway so why shouldn't we be entitled to more?
