Advantages: Gives us some money, no interest as yet
Disadvantages: Not even enough money for a diet of beans, less for finalists, who need more to cover their overdrafts
Who told the student loans company that final year students were more affluent???? Who?????? Any why???????????? I unfortunately have parents who's income band falls just over the line, so i get no means tested support at all, but my parents can't aford to give me much extra. It is hard enough trying to get by on what they give as a basic rate without them cutting it for finalists. It stands at a measly £2485!!!! I made the mistake of choosing Durham University as the place to spend my student years, and, in order to make up for accounting incompetency in the past, they have given us poor students a rent hike so we will be paying in excess of £90 a week for crummy accomodation and crap food (wahey!!!!!!!). This just aint good for my bank balance!!!! Whilst the student loans company may think that, as a third year student i will be more affluent (god only knows where they got that idea from!), i will be worse off, and having to pay more for my university accomodation. The lesson to learn from this, DON'T COME TO DURHAM UNIVERSITY, and get on with campaigning against the government over student loans!!!!

- 23/08/01 Incidentally, my personal best for p**sing away my loan is just over 4 weeks in very first term at Uni. That same period also accounted for my grant cheque and £2500 I had banked at the time. I still can't quite work out how I managed to do that and have f**k all to show for it... |

- 23/08/01 I've only just noticed the Student Loans section here, and when I find about 3 weeks to spare I'll let you all in on my infuriating dealings with them. Good to see the balance between "Yeah, I like money - cheers" and "It's all a scam - we're being lulled" represented across the wide range of ops we've got on it. Bit brief and non-specific, this one, but you make your point well. Maybe come back to this op at some point and give some more context? |

- 25/06/01 It's true that you can sign on during the summer of your last year, but who ever managed to make their student loan last 12 months.... |
