Advantages: More low income applicants, debt levels reduced
Disadvantages: none
As was announced in the news papers recently the system of loans will return back to the system of income assessed grants. Thanks to a down turn in applications from low income applications, the government has had to rethink its strategies. The attitude about debt tends to be different when you are without the security of mummy and daddy. I actually don't mind getting into debt after all I will be earning far more then a non graduate and will have spent four years enjoying myself on a modest budget admittedly. My one main accusation of the current loans system is the inadequacy of provision in the ammounts made available. Now I am going to durham university which isn't one of the cheapest universities in britain granted. But even after accepting the full loan ammount made available to me I am left with only 200 to live on this term. I have financial aid from my parents so it isn't an issue, but in the case of someone from a lower income back ground this ammount would not be sufficient to live on. It equates to £20 a week. For this reason I think that the abolition of the SLC is probably a good idea it will encourage more people into further education and mean that students don't have the looming debt once they finish university. This does not mean that graduates get away without ever paying their dues mind. Nothing in this life is truly free instead a graduate tax will be used to recoup money from all graduates therefore paying for what was essentially a free education.

- 01/11/01 I think they are perhaps forcing people down that route because to get a decent job, before long, you will need a degree. I would like to see a range of alternatives so school leavers have a genuine choice of options. |

- 28/10/01 Perhaps the government is trying to send too many people to university but why should that be a bad thing. |

- 28/10/01 I think the Government is trying to send too many people to University - there should be many other educational opportunities available, those students who do go should be funded to the level that they would be if they were at without a job and on benefits. |
