Advantages: Supported education, helps a wide range of people

Disadvantages: We might breed a group of people who care

AS I have a son about to start university this Autumn, It concerns me that my son has to be in debt, in order to get an education. I am unable to give any substantal help, and it concerns me that not only does he have to deal with the degree situation, he is also being forced to hang a mill stone round his neck, with student loan.
People of my generation, got degrees by being financially supported by their education departments. These very people are now in government, and implementing these horrendous loans on to the young people. Why should we encourage our young people to work hard at school, get good grades, and then for a large number of them say, well you can go to university but we won't help you.
Surley we should be encouraging them to expand their knowledge both accademically and socially. Then we will be developing a wide mixture of people who can contribute to society.
Where would we be if the education in the 60s, 70s, and 80s had not been available. Progress would have been slow, and there would not be wealth of information that has sprung from this supported education.

Cressida,
Worry not!
I know it seems unfair that your son will get into debt, but hopefully he'll get a good job at the end of it!
I would encourage him though to work during his holidays, this way he'll keep his debts down as he goes along.
Also, remind him that he may have to lay off the designer clothes and CD's for a few years, and that if he goes on holiday, it will all mount up.
I adopted this strategy and left Uni relatively undebted.
