Advantages: Cheap loan.

Disadvantages: All the phone calls make it far more expensive.

When I applied for my loan I planed to do a three year course, so filled in the forms accordingly. At the start of my third year I decided to do an extra year. At this point I had already filled in the forms for my third year loan. This meant that I was due to receive the reduced loan for students in their final year. I thought it would be nice to have the extra couple of hundred quid given to penultimate year students.
The loans representative at my uni told me it was possible to change my graduation date held by the loans company. To get this done all I had to do was to phone up the main offices where they could sort it all out for me. When I phoned I had to talk to about five people before I found someone that agreed that it was possible. All I would have to do was sign a form and when my next loan instalment was due I would get what was owed to me.
When my next loan was paid in, all I got was a final year student’s instalment. Not being too happy with this, I phoned up to see what had gone wrong. After being passed from one department to the next I was put on hold, where I stayed for fifty minutes paying peak rate phone charges, until six o’clock when the line just went dead. When I phoned back I got a message saying the lines were closed, which made me really happy! To make things worse the next day when I phoned up again I was told the department I wanted had a free phone number. After convincing them I could change my completion date another form was sent out and a new loan account was set up and at last I received my extra money and I was happy.
My happiness has now disappeared as when I came to apply for my fourth year loan, the loans company has told me that I have now graduated, which I have not. So it looks like I will be spending a few more hours on the phone trying to sort this mess out.

P.S. Please could you not phone the loans company for a while, as I don’t fancy having another hour wait before I
can speak to someone.

To be honest with you, Ive not had too much trouble from the SLC, only grants. My advice would be to get one of the uni's financial assistants to take your case on. Perhaps the students union can help as well. Saves you messing about all the time.
