At inflation rate interest levels these loans are essentially free money - Advantages: Loans at low interest rates, Available to all students on a means tested basis, Only pay them off when you can afford to - Disadvantages: Limit to the amount you can take out, Lots of forms to fill in, Not sufficient to cover normal student expenditure

Since the dawn of time students have been skint. Lets face it, debt is part of the sacrifice you must make to further yourself a little, in addition to leaving home and moving to a whole new place all alone. The student loan is the most important part of the students new life. First for non-students, a quick overview on how the system works. ...

I took out a student loan when starting my degree because there was no way that my parents could support me and my younger sister with the wages they were getting. First you have to be assessed by your Local Edcuation Authority and once they have done this, they tell you how much you are entitled to borrow. This amount depends on your ...

University? Should the government pay for it? That is what I thought, and I was deeply angered when I had to pay £1025 last year for my tuition fees. However, I'm in my second year at University and can finally see what the Government are doing. During my free time I have to work - this helps me mature. I have to ...

Students struggle financially. Full stop. Rent, bills, food, medicine are amongst the basic needs and a part-time job isn't going to support everything. The Labour government took grants away in 1998 and the only available source of help is in the form of the Student Loans Co. which is now means tested as well. The average loan is ...

Gone are the days when students received grants which could be topped up using a loan! No, nowadays the main source of a studnet income is a student loan. I do understand this though as generally students have high earning potentials and can afford to pay back the money eventually therefore why should we be given! However there are several ...

Student Loans are an excellent way for hard up students to purchase their first Playstation. Let's face it, the average student would not ordinarily be able to purchase necessities, such as a decent hifi separates system, or a flatscreen television, without the help of the Student's Loan Company. I would rather that young people ...

I rely entirely on my student loan, I fill in the forms correctly, I've had 2 cheques from the SLC bounce because of administrative incompetence. I'm a student in London, my older sister studies at York. We both rely entirely on our student loans and have had major problems with the system. Between the pair of us we have endured ...

Unfortunately as a student I need to deal with the Student Loan Company. OK, I don't have any complaints about them, they're just doing their jobs but oh my god - the Government. How dare a load of old tightwads who don't need to worry about money decide that we have to pay for the "privilige" of being educated. It is ...

If you are considering to begin a degree this year, you'll find you'll need a student loan to help you with living costs. This opinion will help out anyone choosing whether to do a degee or not (in financial terms). Basically, everyone who is planning to study a HE course is entitled to apply for a student loan and everyone will get ...

To avoid student loans the answer is simple - become a Teacher in IT, DT, Maths, or half a dozen other subjects. Grants for these subjects where teachers are in short supply stand at about £6000max at present. I've been Graduated for 18 months now (no I didn't have to pay fees) & came out of Uni in about £9000 debt. These icluded £4500 of ...

So today I got the next installment of my student loan. Hooray just enough to pay off my overdraft. For the first time in ages my balance will be a plus figure. I would personally like to speak to the person who decides how much people get whilst studying at university. People may say students spend all their time at the pub drinking to their ...

I remember my days of being at Uni. Things were tight money wise but I had the benefit of living at home. Hence, when it was my turn to step out into the big wide world, my Student loan was not as monsterous as some of my friends. some of them had racked up £10,000 worth of debt. That is a lot in 3 years but unfortunately necessary for ...

As a student I find student loans a necessity but i also feel that they do not cover ones needs for the year. The amount I was given has barely covered my first semester. I pay my own fees but not accommodation and have found that I have still needed to use an overdraft facility in order to get through the first semester. The strange thing is that ...

EMA is a new concept for many students studying at full-time college education. Luckily, I live in one of the first areas that it is tested out on, so I get to benefit. Basically, if you are in full time college education, the student will be awarded a set amount of money deposited into their account in 2 week arrears. Depending on ...

Yup scrap them, they are nonsence, most people who leave university never have enough money to pay them off, ever. They do not allow you to take out other large loans, morgages are a problem especially if you did something like fine arts, drama or hair and beauty or something else completly useless. The government should go back to ...

I think that student loans are a really bad idea. Students have enough problems to face during their time a university without having to get themselves into so much debt. I`ve got friends who have graduated owing well over £10,000 and they haven`t been spending to excess. They have just been living a cheaop lifestyle, trying to skrimp and save ...

As a mature student,i have recently applied for my second student loan, having ironically only just paid back the one i took out nine years ago.Swings and roundabouts. My experience with them has been that the organisation is an efficient, helpful, company that is now privately owned, rather than government run. This, however, has its advantages as ...

Student loans are now a fact of life, students should all get them. In my experience there was a load of students who just got the money and lodged in a bank, and got about 5% profit tax free, a useful income. The other group had to spend theirs on rent and food. You always hear scare stories of students who blow all their loan in the first ...

I applied for a loan at the end of July and 2 weeks later I received my letter of approval. I then had to wait until the beginning of November for my letter of award as the company had 'misplaced' my application. When the letter of award eventually did come through, I was shocked at the small amount they were offering me. Fair enough, I ...
