I haven’t been a university student as yet much to my dismay however my husband has. We met young and I have seem him through all of his higher and further education. He attended UCL and the fares up to London was over £1000 a year for a 4 year course, his family helped what they could and he got a full grant but that hardly covered a ... Read the complete review

Unfortunately student loans are a necessity unless you have rich parents willing to subsidise your course or have a wonderful get rich quick scheme by which you can rake in a fortune without putting in any work ( If it's the latter then please let me know your secret!! ) For me applying for my student loan was top priority! A recently-graduated student, I couldn't have survived at University without the safety-net of a student loan. Lots of people have grown up with a phobia about borrowing money, and I have to say I used to be one of them. But when you end up at Uni, wishing you had the money to do fun things and go out/abroad/etc with friends, or just ... Read the complete review

I think that the basic idea of the student loan is ok. some people should be expected to pay for their university education. but i still think that about £2000 should be recieved as a grant because by the time i finish my degree i will owe £12000 which is more than my dad owes at 40. starting a new working life with that hanging over your head ... I took out a student loan of £1000 back in 1994. Unfortunately, since then I have not been in a position to earn enough to pay it back. However, almost every year I have problems with the Student Loan Co because they do not acknowledge my deferral request. I then get letters telling me I have to start paying them. I know someone who has ... Read the complete review

I started at university eight years ago, doing a degree, followed by a PhD. Now that I have got myself a job, the student loans that I got out have now come home to roost. Whilst the idea of self-finance has been a bitter pill to swallow, I don't think it would be possible to find a better loan system, with lower interest rates. ... Read the complete review

I am not a student and have not been for some years but all the time I see young people struggleing to eek a living in seedy little dead end jobs trying desperately to put themselves through university to provide us with profesionals that we will undoubtedly need one day, surely it is not too much to ask that we give a little of our Tax money to ... I in no way approve of the new system of paying fees and the abolishment of the student grants, however we just have to accept that it has happened, and I would therefore recommend getting a student loan. The interest rate for the loan is currently 2.1% which means that you pay back in real terms what you borrowed due to inflation. I ... Read the complete review

When I applied for my loan I planed to do a three year course, so filled in the forms accordingly. At the start of my third year I decided to do an extra year. At this point I had already filled in the forms for my third year loan. This meant that I was due to receive the reduced loan for students in their final year. I thought it would be ... Student loans are a necessity for those at university now. Since grants were abolished 2 years ago. Unfortunatly, it's a fact of life now, that if you go to university you will leave being upto £12,000 in debt. Luckily, the debt isn't like a morgage in that the interest is quite low, and you don't start paying it back until ... Read the complete review

Student loans are available to students at university, when I was studying a couple of years ago, I was on a student grant with dependants allowances for my two children.I also worked part time. I was determined not to get into debt before I had even re trained for my new career. Then a fellow student asked why I was not taking out the loan, I ... Read the complete review

i completed my degree 5 years ago now and have just finished paying back my student loan. Whilst at uni I was inelligible for a Grant due to my folks apparently earning too much in the year before I went to uni, but then when I came to going to uni, they were unable to support me. The student loans helped out a lot, but i did also have to ... Read the complete review

I found the money from a student loan to be 'useful'. It was a sum of money that would be used for a mojor purchase like a new roof! However, it was not enough to live on. You would often find that there would be a delay in receiving cheques and when you tried to telephone, it was constantly engaged to the degree that it would be fair to ... Read the complete review

The ubiquitous student loan. An extremely good idea in principle - it gives students the opportunity to borrow at least £2700 per year, at interest rates of around 2%. Now, this makes financial sense to anyone - whether they actually need to take out the loan to survive university, or not. If they do, then it provides a valuable aid, and at the ... Going to university in London, I receive about £4500 under the new government student loan scheme. For my first year this has been perfectly adequate, but then halls in London are compare favourably. The great thing about these loans is that they are interest free (but inflation linked). I don't know whether I am going to be able to ... Read the complete review

Well not really. But, I graduated three years ago and since then been earning a reasonable living. Have I paid off my loan yet. NO! of course not. I have just graduated from University and my final year was financially very difficult. This was mainly due to the fact that my student loan was decreased by £800. This is standard practice for student loans. In my first and second years, I was able to borrow around £2300, but in my final year the amount was £1500. This made life really tough. ... Many students these days are having to take out student loans to even stand a chance of getting through three or four years at university. With the introduction of tuition fees the amount that a student could take out per year increased by £1000 increasing the burden of debt before they have even started their university career. ... The best part about Student Loans company is that the blighter can't ever take anything off you. You can leave university and never work again and they can't take anything from you. I'm not saying to do this, but just to show that you don't have to worry. You only pay the loan back if you earn more than 10,000 a year and then it ... Read the complete review
