Please DO NOT USE red lion construction, the part owner John Platt will give a low quote and promise the world to secure the job but in reality will not finish anything correctly to the standard expected. He will only work with cash and give any form of receipt, he always has an excuse to leave after he has been given cash ie spare parts, more sand / cement / wood etc etc but does not return for days. He has since told me I need more work carries out and demands more cash.John Platt is an ignorant incompetent man who will let you down constantly, I paid the quote and another £5000 of asking for a garage conversion but was forced to get another builder / company to complete the work.Red lion construction should be permitted to continue to operate.
Meersbrook construction charged me £2.5K more than the estimate (of £8k).
While the work was being done, I asked the boss to come over several times to discuss the shoddy workmanship, for example, plasterboarding over a cupboard, damaging my new light fitting, breaking my hoover, workers didn't have the right equipment for the job (I bought them a bucket from B&Q to stop them using my wastepaper basket to mix plaster in!), they worked short days (they were on site from 8am, but were sat in the van until 9.30 most days, and they were gone by 4, when I got home from work).
I refused to pay the extra, and they took me to court. they didn't give any evidence on the day of the court appearance, and I stupidly agreed to pay them some of the extra.
then I realised that the shower they fitted didn't have a corner seal nor a seal between tray and wetwall, so the water seeped down onto the ceiling below, it took a while (as the shower wasn't being used very much) but eventually it damaged the ceiling below, they have refused to remedy this, I had to pay a plumber to sort it out. and I still haven't sorted the ceiling.
After the job was finished, I got professional advice and was informed that they should have told me to sort building regs, the new en-suite , so I'm advised, will not pass regs as there is no vent.
I went back to court to ask the court to set aside the extra payment, but, on a technicality, I have been ordered to pay. During the court case, they accused me of lying.
So now I'm left with paying the extra, fixing the ceiling and possibly taking out the en-suite toilet.
I asked Comber and Son (East Grinstead area) for quotations for a number of small jobs. They were a bit expensive but I decided to proceed with one job. Plastering my 20ft x 10 feet lounge for over £900.
Firstly they brought a load of material on site to carry out the other work that I had not instructed them to do and they also took up my patio (one of the jobs for which they had quoted) and have refused to relay it.
The standard of the plastering was appalling. They did not remove the skirting or the sockets and light switches. There were very uneven patches, dents and some parts just not done. I told them I was not going to pay for that so they got the plaster back again who undertook some remedial work (the most obvious patches) and sanded down without using dust covers.
Combers advise me that it is normal not to remove sockets and plugs when re-plastering! They told me that the poor finish between the ceiling and the walls was not their responsibility as they had not done the ceiling. They had and even if they had not done the ceiling they would have been doing the walls after the ceiling had been done so double fail. The contract manager seemed unaware of what they were supposed to be doing and more interested in winning an argument than providing a good quality service.
The plastering was not even to a standard for a £200 cash job. Certainly the worst. I told them I would not pay for an incomplete job and six months later the work is still not complete.
Combers are the worst builders I have ever dealt with (and I have worked with builders in a professional capacity).
After agreeing a price and completion time of 3 weeks (with an army of labour) for a side extension the nightmare began. I paid the 1st installament 7k for a weeks worth of work, materials and labour. After one man working one day, Darren requested a 2nd installament of 2k for 2nd week, it was clear Darren had no idea of being a project manager and was not to be trusted. I paid it as it was in his quote. The job then became drawn out. 3 more days work was completed over a month. Then no contact for the next month. Then came the excuses (all excuses have been seen on rogue traders), heart attack, car wont start etc etc. Now he requests final payment after doing 5 days worth of work and all thats done is the shell and roof. I paid in installments to get him to turn up, after last payment he stops. I won a court case against him for 5k, which he now pays in installments of £50 a week. Thats 10 years to get back my 5k he stole from me. So, if you wont a non contactable builder, who lies and steals your money, and has no idea on what hes doing then Darren Roddy is your man. Note, the builders who work for him were all great, its a shame he is the man you will deal with.
Had my property "renovated" by them. They left holes in the walls, gloss paint that wouldn't dry because the surfaces hadn't been properly prepped, faulty wiring, a loose and dangerous power socket, a bathroom ceiling that hadn't been painted with waterproof paint and later cracked (photos available if you want to verify it) and failed to meet the deadlines agreed, losing me valuable rental income. Their website claims they provide a high standard of work; their work says otherwise. I wouldn't trust them to renovate a shed. They specialise in "landlord" work, so if you're a landlord, don't use them. You may find yourself with very unhappy tenants.. or worse still a claim for an unsafe property.Would give them minus 1 if I could. Trading Standards, please note!
We instructed The Allkare Group to carry out work to our property following flood damage- there was quite some work to be done but we were promised they would be able to do all the works that needed doing- They were more than 3 weeks outside the timescales that they gave for the completion of the work- The plastering work was very poorly carried out and the kitchen units have already started moving out of place after less than a year- I would not recommend these builders to anyone as they seem like they are only in it to make money and not in anyway for customer satisfaction (as our complaints fell on deaf ears)!Stay well away from this company! We would never ever use these builders again!.....
I had a large Conservatory built by Kenwyn and found them to be totally professional and reliable. The work carried out was done to a high standard and to budget which was a great help. I will be inviting them back later in the year to revamp the bathroom with no worries, i would recommend them to anybody to carry out work.
I would highly recommend Derek Petrie and Sons because:
They arrived exactly when they said they would for the initial quote and to do the work. The boss Derek explained everything that would be done in easy terms as i have no building exerience.
They completed the work when they said they would.
They did an excellent job removing my chimney breast over two floors.
The boss Derek came to the address and reviewed the work when they finished to make sure i was happy.
The workers tidied up every bit of mess before they left.
The price was reasonable.
I was very pleased with the service. The lads who did the work put in a lot of graft, a very trustworthy group. They just got on with it, no dramas or problems. Will definitely use again for my next rental purchase and recommend to friends.

PW Woods would by far be the worst building company I have ever encounted. We started a renovation nine months ago, which was suppose to be completed in 3 months. The renovation is an absolute disaster, not only because of time frames but poor workmanship where they have cut corners. I have had to source my own labourers (Electrican, painter, flooring the list goes on). Do yourself a masive favour & save your self the pain & steer clear of these unethical poor excuse for builders.Dale & Kerrie Keating
We instructed Edenfield Construction to remodel the downstairs of our house. This involved the creation of a hallway, adding a new door opening into the kitchen and the complete refit of the kitchen.
The whole project was managed brilliantly, we never needed to intervene at any point. All the required tradesmen arrived when they were expected, completed their work to an extremely high standard and tidied up after themselves.
The quality of the fixtures and fittings are of a very high standard, including solid wood doors and solid cabinets. They won't use flat pack cabinets!
The design process was really easy, they have decades of experience between them and it shows. Every last detail was noted and there were no 'nasty surprises' that often spring up during projects of this nature.
We highly recommend the guys at Edenfield Construction and won't hesitate in using them again in the future.
I employed Harris to install a new fitted kitchen. He gave me a price and estimated 2-3 weeks for the work. Despite having paid the agreed instalments on time, he kept asking for more money at crucial stages, such as when my kitchen had been completely gutted, he asked for money to pay for the units and after 5 weeks without a working sink asked to borrow over £1000 with a promise to pay me back once he'd received a cheque from a former client. Of course once all the money had been paid out, he continually failed to turn up for work and never did finish the work I'd paid him for or pay me back what he'd borrowed. Since then I've had to rip up the floor he laid so badly the tiles came loose as soon as you stepped on them and paid other tradesmen to finish the work, and done some of the work myself. I've now had to take him to court for money owed and since found out I'm not the first unhappy client!
My mother, who is 89 years young, employed 3 local companies to do her house up. The work has been substandard to say the least and one word of complaint and they walk away from the job. Then she employed a local builder who would only do the work with extra money, gave my mother and estimate and tried to say that she kept changing her mind. Floor boards needed replacing and they used blockboard - there are pipes underneath. These dummies made a joke about being in her house at Christmas, they won't!!!!!!!!!!
What is the matter with these people when they have no respect for the older generation. My mother is not stupid, still drives and does car boots, not bad for her age!
To make matters worse the builder has gone away on holiday for two weeks, he was due back today, where is he?
Excuse my rant but its been stressful to my family and mum is getting fed up with so called builders. All they want is money up front and then nothing.
They made a lot mistakes and did not do many things level, this was only noticed when we put a spirit level afterwards to several places. They also took much longer than we agreed with them. Also the foreman would usually leave his inexperienced labourers to do the job without him and they would make mistakes. However a few things he used outside contractors which did a good job.In all many things were not done right. Also made a mess, did not use dust sheets and did not clean up well afterwards.
Initial work carried out to a good standard and to timescales agreed. However 15 months after the job was complete I am still chasing to get the initially agreed snagging list complete. The MD of the company appears to be avoiding any contact and when I do manage to get in touch he makes promises that fail to materialise. Their attitude to snagging has been extremely disapointing and I have been unable to get completion signed off by the council as a result.
Builder ...no way if you ever have to use a cowboy, then he is oliver hardy with a cowboy hat on. I got him to do, well try to do my bathroom and decking, joke cost me £4000 and that was with the cost of some one re doing the decking and plumbing pipe work that he had nailed a hammer through. He also ruined 2000 worth of italian tiles.. If you want to get some one to clean you car this is the guy, I think he is from st Lucia or some place like that looks a bit like anelka, but his workmanship is more like blue square anelka and that's giving him more cred than he deserves. STAY AWAY, you have been warned.
