Advantages: When you can find a nice friendly one
Disadvantages: The horrible who look down at you
I hate dentist's as much as the next person, i don't think many people actually enjoy the experience of visiting our dentist, but it has to be done every once in a while, so our beloved teeth can get the regular care they need. We can do everything in our power to try and avoid the dentist like brushing twice a day, flossing, use mouthwash, but if a tooth cracks, or you need a filling the more you put it off, the worse the situation will be.
I personally hate the dentist, for a number of reasons, lets just say my local dentists aren't a friendly bunch, and if you haven't got perfect white shinning teeth they look down upon you! Which isn't very nice considering their job to to look after your teeth and fix any problems you might have.
I had chronic tooth ache last year, and my usual dentist didn't have any appointments for about 3 weeks, so i rang around and asked different surgery's whether they accepted NHS patients because i had just recently had my daughter and had a exemption card- i wasn't going to pay hundreds of pounds to get my teeth sorted, i simply couldn't afford it.
Anyway i found a surgery about ten miles away who said they could see me that afternoon, i arrived and was asked to fill in a form by the snotty receptionist, and then she told me to wait, after about 20 minutes i was called upstairs and was greeted by a female dentist, who didn't really say much she asked me to sit down and started to poke round, she didn't ask me where i was getting the pain, how often etc, but starting yanking my mouth around like she was washing up- the pain was horrid, she kept sniggering to her assistant which made me feel so uncomfortable.
After about 5 minutes she stopped, sat me up and said there you go, come back and see me in a month, my mouth was throbbing so much i managed to get the words out' so whats wrong then' she said she could she anything, but i did need a filling, and showed me the tooth,' but's thats on the opposite side of where the pain is' i said, she didn't take much notice and starting asking me did i brush twice a day, i said yes, and she well you can't do, right you'll have to start using mouthwash, and i said but i do!!! Right well then you'll have to start flossing, so i said OK then i will, in my head i was thinking im never coming back here again and i got out as fast as i could, still with chronic toothache, if fact it was hurting more than what it was when i went it!
So i had to grin and bear the pain for 2 weeks until my usual dentist could see, within minutes of being there he told me that i had an abscess growing behind one of my teeth, and that there wasn't much he could do, but gave me a course of anti-biotics to help, and some pain killers, and within a week the pain had gone.
Now im not slating all dentists, but the majority of ones i have seen in my lifetime have been horrid, spending all that time in dentist school you would have thought that they would have at least learnt how to be nice to patients, and to treat them with with a little respect.
A couple of months ago a local dentist in my town was closed down, because two of the dentists who worked started fighting with each other, and using tools to defend themselves, the where both charged and sacked from the job, but that gives me another reason to be scared of going.
Well you know what they say about teeth, they cause you grief when you first get them, and they cause you grief when you lose them.
Summary: I hate the dentist, do you?

- 07/11/08 I was quite interested to read a review on this topic as am looking for a new one myself. But this was quite hard to read and I gave up due to the very long paragraphs and no line spacing. If you could reformat then it would make it a bit easier on the eye, I suspect it could put people offas it is. |

- 07/11/08 I've just had a filling (first one since I was 10!) and my dentist is lovely! The hygenist however is another story! I swear she must be some kind of a sadist! Horrible! |
