For anyone who isn?t entitled to free Dental care. Here are some tips especially if you are a student. First, I?ve been having a lot of trouble with my tooth. It has chipped a while a go but only recently it started to hurt quite a lot especially at night time. The pain was awful as you can imagine. After a week or so I decided that it was time for me to go to see the dentist. My last visit was some six years a go. So, I had to start from scratch. Luckily, there were five or six local ones all of which were private none were NHS. The first thing I found was the cost was huge. As a student there was no way I could afford such high costs. Nevertheless, I paid a £20 initial fee and went to see the dentist. As I waited for an X-ray result the woman at the reception passed me a piece of paper. Detailing the cost. My mouth nearly fell off. It said that my dental care, three visits would cost me £390. I was blown away. Imagining what I could do with £390 I was quite shocked. My pain was awful but surely it couldn?t cost so much. So I decided to visit some NHS dentists further a field. Luckily I found a dentist was going to do all my dental care which included, three X-rays, one tooth being removed, and polishing for £70. It was much affordable price. Although, my treatment took a month from start to finish, it was affordable and with the help of medication I was able to manage the pain. So my first advice is that if you are going to pay stay away from private dental care, if you are going to pay then pay at a NHS dentist they are much cheaper. Another advice would be try not to leave it to long before you visit your dentist. If I had visited my dentist regularly I could have saved myself a tooth! Also shop around, some places are much more cheaper than other. Don?t start any treatment before a full cost list otherwise you could start something you might be unable to afford to finish.

Fishbulb - 13/03/03 Excellent advice there - I need to go to the dentists about a chipped tooth and for a general check-up, but as you say, it's so much money. I'd be pressed to find a spare £70 most months, let alone £390!!!
