Advantages: Great Economically, better for the environment, provides better security

Disadvantages: Still lets some heat out..

Double glazing is a really broad subject, but having experienced both double and single glazed windows in buildings I feel qualified to write this review. To spoil it all to begin with, my own view is that double glazing is WELL worth the extra initial capital, in the long wrong it will save you an absoloute fortune, and this is becomming increasingly true as the cost of energy increases.

So, what's the difference between double and single glazing? Well single glazed windows are just a single pane of glass suspended in a window frame. Double glazing features two of these panes, sandwiched together with a layer of special material in between. Not only does this provide better insulation against sound and traffic noise, but it also provides much better thermal insulation and really keeps heat in a lot better.

In my experience, the difference between the insulative properties of double glazed windows in comparison to single glazed ones is astronomical. When your central heating comes on in the evening in winter, upon turning it off, in a single glazed house, the air will be chilly again in maybe half an hour. A double glazed house will retain heat for much longer!

Another advantage of double glazing over single glazing is security. It is much harder to cleanly smash a double glazed window and enter a property than through the same sized single glazed window. This is another reason to invest in double glazing, because whilst not bullet proof, it is less attractive to thieves.

In conclusion, double glazing is great for your economy and for the environment and is well well worth the extra investment to put it in to start with. If you do not have double glazing, I feel it should be high on your "to do" list!

Summary: Far better than the old alternative!
