Advantages: get 3 quotes, never sign on the night, it only takes about 30 mins for a quote
Disadvantages: dont let them take the mick
Heres a brief guide to not getting ripped off.I have some experience of double glazing salesmen and believe me they are some bad salesmen out there and also some good ones. I have moved a few times and had double glazing fitted at 3 of the houses i have lived in. When you get the "half price windows" or "special offer windows" leaflets pushed through the door take my advice and throw them in the bin. When you decide to have windows fitted its best to have 3 quotes done to give you some idea of whose going to rip you off and believe me the quotes can vary by a couple of thousand pounds . I normally choose a good local firm ,a regional company and a national one for a good mix of prices and the 3 times i have had double glazing fitted the regional company has come out tops for not only price but for value for money and also quality because its no good having your windows done on the cheap if they look terrible once they are fitted. Take no notice of "if you sign today prices" if they start all that i show them the door. Also take no notice of the "show house discount" all you need to know is the price and the quality of the windows. Ask about how long it takes them to fit your widows,do they use their own tradesmen or use contractors and never pay more than 10 percent deposit. Keep your wits about you and you wont get taken for a ride

- 20/08/02 I hope i do not offend you but it is because of people like yourself that cowboys and the like survive in what is a very competative marketplace. Judging by what you say it is obvious you have a very limited knowledge on the industry yet you have taken it upon yourself to try and advise others of some of the pitfalls that are out there which is fine providing you know what you are talking about. I suspect you are on such a high horse due to the fact that you have probably been shafted by one of the double glazing cowboys and as a result have come to your senses. For the record negotiate your deal and when your happy with it THEN say to the salesman "how much will i get off for being a show home?"
because although i agree with you that some companies do use it to pressure you into a decision on the night, the other side of the coin is that some reputable companies actually DO pay money if you will put a board in your garden because like it or not it IS an effective method of advertising to the people who live in your street who if they are anything like my neighbors will be nosey gits when work is getting done to anyones house except thier own!!!
As i say some of the points you have raised are valid and helpful but others will just mislead the visitors of this very useful site :-) |

- 03/07/02 We've found a very good local company and been delighted with them. No 'special offers' or the other tricks you mention, just a good product fitted by their own employees.
Sue :)
