Advantages: Warmer, sound proof and low maintenance
Disadvantages: The frames are thicker than the old metal ones
Having had double glazing installed in four different houses now (not that I move a lot!!!) I have learned a few lessons the hard way! Firstly, the style. It is very tempting to completely change the design of the windows, but if you have a semi-detached house take care, as it can make the pair look unbalanced if they are totally different. Although I made the mistake of keeping the windows in the same style and then my neighbours changed theirs to Gothic looking church type windows so I needn't have bothered! Next house we chose wooden replacement windows. I wouldn't choose them again. They need far more maintenance than the upvc ones and are affected by the weather. In our present bungalow I insisted that I wanted top openers and went ahead with my order. However, I now find that the top windows in several of them are difficult to access as there is furniture against the wall and I would have been better to have had push out windows; it would have been cheaper too, as the companies usually charge per "opener". Leaded lights are more expensive, but I do like them and have never regretted that. Remember that the frames are always thicker than the frame of an old metal window and take this into account. Just make sure you don't feel as though, "You've Been Framed!"

- 23/07/00 I live in a Grade 2 listed cottage, and Planning Permission is a must! My next door neighbours have gone ahead, just at the back of their cottage, and ignored the rules. They have kept to wood, and I can honestly say, unless you knew, you'd never notice they've had it done. |
