Advantages: nice environment, books as well as CD ROMS, and computers.
Disadvantages: none
First of all, YES, there is definitely still a need for libraries. I can’t believe anyone would think otherwise. Libraries need to change, but as I am aware, they are changing, and they need to continue to change and adapt. Have you ever attempted to read a whole novel on the Internet? Even though there is a lot of literature available on the Internet, it’s just not the same to sitting down with an actual book. I know that the Internet is supposed to be an excellent research tool, but often, from my experience it is still easier to look for a book. Sometimes it can just take too long to locate what you need, and other times the information might not be in as easy to use format as a book. If I had a choice, I would often prefer to use a book, as it is just easier to flick through. I have used the Internet a lot for research, especially during my university course, and as useful as it is, I don’t think it can replace books. From my experience, the Internet complements more traditional research, rather than replacing it. I think that libraries have developed very well over the last few years, and many now provide access to computers and CD ROM’s, as well as printing facilities, and free online access. I think this is very useful, and allows those who do not have home computers to have Internet access.

- 20/11/00 Read a novel on the internet - nah! You're absolutely right! The best thing about our local library are the story-telling afternoons they run for children. |
