Advantages: Convenient, flexible

Disadvantages: Slightly more expensive, limited range

When I moved into my house a couple of years ago I got a knock on the door from a young milkman touting for business. I decided to give him a go on the promise that the milk would be delivered early so I had it before work. He kept his promise and has never let me down.

So, about a year ago, he left me a leaflet which introduced me to milk and more. I went on to the site and I was pleasantly suprised. This was a modern approach to the old fashioned milk delivery and looked to me like the way to save the milk round from extinction.

First, it allowed me to pay online instead of leaving money in a bag tucked behind the empties! Secondly, it allowed me to organise my deliveries, with the ability to add things at the last minute (i.e the night before the delivery) such as an extra pint or a loaf of bread. And I should say that when I've used these facilities my bills have been paid and my extras have been delivered.

It also introduced me to the full range of products which could be delivered from the staple foods to pet food and compost (I just ordered some compost which is what prompted this review). You can also amend your regular orders and put in dates when you will be away so the order is suspended and begins again on your return.

Whilst the items are slightly more expensive than the supermarket and rather more limited in selection, the convenience of ordering from my armchair and merely collecting from the doorstep in the morning outweighs the cost.

The site has very recently been improved and now allows payment by direct debit. I signed up for this and will receive my free carton of organic orange juice tomorrow!

So, with this website the milk round has entered the digital age and hopefully means that the early morning whirr of the milk float and the chinking of bottles will remain with us for some time to come.

Summary: A modern take on an English institution.
