Advantages: Talk to others in similar situation, Get great tips and advice, Make new friends

Disadvantages: Need to pluck up courage to go!

I first visited my local mother and toddler group when my baby was four months old, although I'd been plucking up the courage to go for a long time! In the first few months of my baby's life I found it difficult to cope and ended up sitting in the house day-in-day-out. I was becoming very fed up with myself and in turn felt like taking it out on my son. My mum kept saying I'd feel better if I went out and did something- eventually I listened!

The group I go to is about 40 mins walk from my house in a library. There are ones nearer to me but I haven't tried them out yet! It is run by the National Childbirth Trust but you don't have to be a member.
As I said it took me a long time to actually get there- the first time I went I nearly chickened out. I don't regret trying it though!

When I opened the door I was greeted by the sound of chatter, laughter and kids screeching happily. I sat down next to a friendly looking girl and we got chatting. The NCT representative came over to introduce herself and tell me a little about the NCT. She explained that while I didn't have to join the organisation, it would be appreciated if I made a donation of about 50p to cover the costs of tea and coffee etc. I was more than happy to do so, but I didn't want to join until I decided if I would go again.

Although it seemed that everyone knew each other already, it wasn't 'cliquey' and we all had something in common- babies! I soon got to discussing interesting matters such as angles of projectile vomit! No, seriously, it was great to be able to talk to others and not feel like a complete moron. I think when you've just had a baby and are a stay-at-home parent it's hard to think of anything but baby care and housework.

I enjoyed the group and have been going back ever since- my baby is now eight months. There are some different people every week, although I do recognise familiar faces
most times I go. There are plenty of toys for the kids to play with, and the ages range from newborns to 3 or 4, so it's great for any parent with pre-school children.

I don't think there are any disadvantages about going to a mother and toddler group- they are great and I would recommend them to any mum (or dad) if they want to preserve their sanity.
