Newest Review: ... each 'catchment area' has an OOH GP and I think this is worked out via your postcode. The last time I used NHS 24 was approximately 4 months ago, on a Friday evening. I had some severe pain in my lower back which had started as a slight "twinge" around teatime. Putting it down to nothing more than an ache, I didn't give it a second thought until later when I noticed that the ... more

Crowned Review NHS 24: WHERE WOULD I BE WITHOUT THEM? (1268 words)

I should start out this review by explaining that I suffer with terrible health and have a chronic illness. This illness got so bad that I was hospitalised in January 2007 to have major surgery on my Colon, I required to have approximately a third of it removed with a large section of small bowel removed at the same time. Following rather severe complications, I did not manage to recover well from my operation and stay in Hospital for the "usual" 5 days, but instead required two further major operations (one of which was an emergency) and had to remain in hospital for over two months until I recovered enough to be allowed to go home. As ...  Read the complete review

NHS 24 is the Scottish equivalent of NHS Direct and is funded by the Scottish Government. Launched in 2004, it is designed to relieve the burden on Accident & Emergency departments at hospitals and I have had reason to use it on a couple of occasions. The first time I used it was when my daughter developed chickenpox while I was staying with my sister. At the time we lived in London so obviously our GP was there and I needed advice so I could take her to a doctor on a Sunday outwith her usual area. I called NHS 24 for this information and received an initial response fairly quickly but then had to wait about 5 minutes before I was able to ...  Read the complete review

I love the idea of our national health service but it never seems to run anything like as smoothly as it is supposed to and although it is free health care for the nation we still seem to spend half our time moaning about it. Well there is one part of the national health service (NHS) that works tremendously well or has done for me in the times I have used it which is five in total 3 times for myself and twice for my little niece and that is the NHS 24. NHS 24 is a helpline set up for people to use out of surgery hours when they cannot contact a doctor rather than everyone just descending upon A&E departments. The idea is you phone the NHS 24 ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Am I going to be OK? (1469 words)

I don’t know about you, but when I feel unwell, I have a large tendency to fear the worse and think that I am at best going to suffer my symptoms for a long time or at worse end up in hospital or something similar. For me, I think it is a personality trait and while maybe not a great one, it is there and can cause panic and distress at times that I could be doing with knowing that everything will be ok. Up until a couple of years ago, if something like this were to have happened to me, I would most likely sit in a blind panic over what to do. Since I know that I can be this way, I would try my hardest not to get my flatmate to drive me to A & E as I really ...  Read the complete review
