Advantages: Chemical Free And Cheap In The Long Run Cheap.

Disadvantages: The Pests Are Not Killed, They Just Move Elsewhere.

It was late March at work when I suddenly began scratching my legs around the ankle region. At first I didn't take any notice until some black ants began appearing on my desk. Initially it was just an infrequent straggler but it got to a point where the back of my note book resembled an insect graveyard.

I immediately told the boss who suggested that the sweet papers I had thrown into the waste paper basket beside me were the bait that was attracting them. I reckoned my sweet ankles were more of an attraction considering I had almost drawn blood from scratching them. When our secretary noticed a little creature crawling up her arm the authorities had no choice but to swing into action.

Their solution was a plug-in device called Pestclear 2000. It retails for around £45 but it really is worth every penny because it more or less banished the little blithers. The product is built to be effective against rats, mice and most insects. It is even effective against mosquitoes for when you are away on holidays. The advantage this product has over the competition is that you don't need a stock of tablets to recharge the unit.

Pestclear 2000 works as follows. It is shaped like a plug and can be attached to any standard 3-pin wall socket. Pests are attacked on 2 fronts. Firstly there is an electromagnetic function that can be switched between slow and fast. Basically Pestclear sends electromagnetic interference through the buildings wiring system which annoys rodents and others pests that have nested in the vicinity of the electric wires. According to the documentation they feel an irritating, itching sensation that is unbearable which leads them to move on elsewhere. You can actually hear the crackle of electric noise when this function is set to fast.

There is also an ultrasound function that is used to protect the room where the unit is placed but cannot travel through large objects. This function can be alternated between low
and high frequencies. Set to high you can just about pick up the noise which is like the sound of a distant whistle. This is quite annoying after a time but needs to be set to this level to ward off flying insects like mosquitoes. At the low setting the ultrasound is effective against small insects and is virtually inaudible.

The makers of Pestclear promise that the product is safe near food, children and pets (what about the poor pet hamster going out of its mind in its cage!). The main tagline is that it is chemical free, which is a unique feature in the fight against rodents in the home. I could imagine businesses like hotels would find the device invaluable. It certainly beats having a customer finding a cute rectangular box with a strange looking powder enclosed under their bed.

I had the ultrasound facility set to low and varied the electromagnetic function between slow and fast every few days. I noticed a drop off in the number of ants after a couple of days. As my ankles became less itchy, the numbers dwindled. After 2 weeks the ants had fled completely. Brighter Image, the makers of Pestclear maintain that the device is effective for up to 2000 square feet. They seem to be as good as their word because our building is now ant free.

I had the device plugged in beside me at work and I must say that my concentration levels dipped considerably while it was switched on. At times it seemed like I was in a complete daze, sort of like having a hangover without the pain. I couldn't put my mind to work at all (hard at the best of times!). Then I reasoned that this had all started around the same time I'd plugged in the device. I moved it to the other side of the room and hey presto my sanity was restored. People say I have mousey hair but surely that is the extent of my rodent like qualities. After this incident I am beginning to wonder!

Each Pestclear device includes a 2-year limited warranty. The initial outlay may se
em excessive at £45 but is much cheaper that getting a firm like rent-a-kill in. Pestclear 2000 is well recommended as long as you keep your distance when it is switched on. For more information on Pestclear there is a website that is worth checking out at www.brighterimage.ie

KingHerrod,
Probably not. I would imagine that the device has a limited range and that the giraffe's ears are too far away from the ground level mains socket where the device is plugged. It should get rid of any fleas round its ankles though.
