Advantages: worthy causes
Disadvantages: none
Plan UK are a charity based in the UK who help communities in the poorest countries in the world. A large majority of the money they raise are through people sponsoring children. You can sponsor a child in a number of countries that are below the poverty line including many countries in Africa and South America, and countries like India and Armenia.
Sponsoring a child through Plan UK is brilliant for many reasons. I started sponsoring a little girl in Malawi about a year ago. I was researching many charities that give you the opportunity to sponsor a child and I thought Plan looked the best. The best thing about it, I think, is that although you are assigned a child that you sponsor, the money you give goes to causes all over the world, not just to the village that the child is from. I think that this is great as you know your money is being used for a number of worthy causes.
Quarterly, Plan send out a news letter to it's sponsors detailing all of the work they are doing. It's really good to see what they are using your money for and makes you more inclined to give more when you can see the good it is doing. You also get updates on the community your sponsored child is from which is again great because you can see how your money has helped in a more direct intimate way.
I also picked Plan because it is not a religious charity. I have nothing at all against religion but I liked Plan because it helps communities regardless of religion and I think this is right.
You can write to your sponsored child and they write back to you. It takes about 6 months to receive a reply after you send a letter due to translations and delivery. I love hearing from the little girl I sponsor and the life she leads.
Another great thing about Plan is that they don't ask you to give huge amounts of money. Some companies asked for more than I could afford but Plan ask for just £12 a month and there are opportunities to give more if you can. They are also very considerate and don't send lots and lots of requests for additional money like some charities do.
Sponsoring a child is a great way to give money to a large number of worthy causes and is a great way to find out more about other cultures.
