Disadvantages: BAD BAD Fitting, poor after sales customer service

I had my windows and doors fitted in 1998 by Safestyle UK. I chose them because their quote was the best one I received and the sales staff were very friendly.

I know if you are reading this you will think why is she only writing a review now 8 years on but all will become clear.

I don't know much about Upvc windows and doors so when the fitting was complete and I was asked to sign for it, everything seemed ok and I was happy with the job.

I have had a couple of issues with their customer services team and they did sort one problem out but the other was just completely ignored and I had to pay another company to sort it out - the glass in a top opener cracked from side to side and they said it wasn't their fault! The company I got in to replace the glass said it was a pressure crack and should have been replaced by safestyle - it cost me £58.75 to have it replaced.

Anyway back to the present. I was on my way home from work on Tuesday this week and I received a phone call from my husband to say our house was being burgled - we have a monitored alarm and the monitoring station had contacted my husband to notify him (they also notified the police who were waiting for me when I got home surprise surprise!!!). When I arrived home I discovered that our (Safestyle Upvc) front door had been kicked in and the thieves had gotten away with our brand new 32" LCD TV.

I was absolutely gobsmacked that the front door could be kicked in and at 3.25 in the afternoon!! I have felt very unsafe and uncomfortable both at home and away from home ever since. We have had two separate companies in to assess the condition of the door and they have both said the same thing - the product is really good but the fitting is the worst they have ever seen. The bolts for the frame were screwed into the mortar and not the bricks and it was fitted so badly that the frame bowed on impact and the door basically popped out of the locks - the thieves must have thought it was christmas.

I have learned the hard way not to trust what appears at face value to be a good job. We have to have the door and frame completely replaced (not by Safestytle but by a local reputable company) and the man that came out from the company said that the reason Safestyle put so much Upvc trim around the door frames is because it is obviously hiding the poor job they have done. When he took all the upvc architrave off you could see daylight through the sides of the frame and you could also see where the bolts had been screwed into the mortar. He said if any extreme pressure had been put on the frame that the whole lot would have collapsed in!

Not only a botched job but a very dangerous, costly job both financially and emotionally. I am only thankful that nobody was at home at the time!

Summary: Don't use Safestyle under any circumstances!!!!

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been away for a fortnight. When I originally purchased the doors & windows one of my main concerns was security as I had an old glass front door and the windows had no locks at all (I had recently move in). Safestyle assured me that their products were the best on the market and that they used their own fitters not contractors so we could be sure of an excellent job. They assured me that the front door and frame were the most secure available and showed me various samples of the materials used and also explained the testing the products go through to ensure their integrity prior to them being sold to the public.

I had no reason to disbelieve them. As I have said before the quality of the product is not in dispute rather the fitting which is just as, if not more important.

I realised when the fitters arrived that they were contractors and not employed by Safestyle - I should have realised the lie straight away but when I questioned it I was told that they were so busy at the time they did not have enough of their own fitters and had to use contractors to meet demand.

I am not naieve and I realise that one company will criticise the work of another simply to get your custom. It just seems funny that the sames comments were made by both companies also one of the companies was so shocked at the poor fitting they put extra screws in when they came out to give their assessment regardless of whether they got the job or not.

As I have said I am no expert in double glazing but when all the UPVC architrave was taken off and I saw what it was hiding, I realised it was a poor fitting - also the fact that there were only 2 screws in the base of the frame securing it to the floor at either end clearly explained why the door popped open so easily.

The product came with a 10 year guarantee but I have previously discovered that this guarantee is selective - it doesn't seem to cover anything which may need to be replaced - e.g. the pressure crack in the opener which I had to replace myself after Safestyle promised to replace it. In fact they came out and inspected it and agreed to replace it, they gave me a date for replacement and I took the time off work but they never turned up. After I rang to complain they arranged another date and didn't turn up then either! I rang again and was told the van was on the way with the replacement but it didn't arrive! I rang again but couldn't get any information then 2 days later I got a letter saying that they weren't replacing it under the guarantee it was my responsibility.

The bottom line is it doesn't matter how good the product is if it's not fitted correctly as I have discovered to my cost.

I am not sure that this one off event is a fair one on the company since I do not know what they promised in the way of security, and think that contacting them would have been my first channel of complaint. Frequently, another company criticises the work of another simply to get your custom. It was a horrible experience, but telling us the details of what safe style actually told you about the safety of their products and what they have to say about the repairs might have helped enormously. Also what guarantee do they give ?
