Bookstart is a great scheme, after all who doesn't like free stuff! When my son was born I went to my local library for the monthly Baby Time Rhyme and Story session and was told that if I signed him up to the library I'd get a free Bookstart bag of books. I did this and got a great canvas bag which gets used loads now for nappies, shopping etc, some information about reading with your baby and 2 free books. The books are small books with no fancy touch feely / flaps / music etc which is actually a nice change as it means that even from a very early age my son could have them to look at on his own with no danger of any real damage. Bookstart is a programme that encourages parents to read to their children and enjoy story time together as early on as possible. Bookstart is a fantastic idea, any parent with a new baby will receive their Bookstart pack when your child's around 6 months. These packs are free to all children and parents through schemes in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. You should receive yours from your Health Visitor but they are also available from your local libraries. The first pack is aimed at 0 - 12 month old. The pack comes in a useful canvas shoulder bag (I use it for swimming now). It includes two books from a range of different ...  Read the complete review

I'd never heard of Bookstart until my mum asked me to take my sister for her 2 year check at the doctors because my other sister had a hospital appointment, my mum might be organised when it comes to stuff like that but she can't be in 2 places at once so I found myself putting up with my sisters tantrum when she decided she didn't want to be measured! At the end of the appointment the Health Visitor took my sister to choose a bag that had got the logo above printed on it. It turned out to be a book bag like the nursery kids take to school and had got a selection of books and activities inside. The Health Visitor told me that Bookstart is something ...  Read the complete review

Books start is a government run scheme that is promoted by local libraries and health visitors. The aim of the scheme is to encourage families to make books a part of their weekly life style. The bookstart scheme offers a number of 'freebies' which you can collect from your health visitor or library when you show them your child's red record book that they receive at birth. The first book start pack is received when the child is around 9 months old. It contains two basic board books, some general information about how effective, taking the time to reading with you child can be, a membership form to your local library and various other useful bits of ...  Read the complete review
