Book start is a national program that promotes a life long love of books, and the program believes that every child in the UK should enjoy books from as early age as possible.

You child will receive three book start packs

The health visitor at their 8-month check gives the first one at babies, you receive:
A canvas Book start bag - very handy having extra bags with children
Two baby books - my favourite one was a black and white one with a mirror in the back with the words "this is the baby I love best".
A nursery rhyme place mat - I used this to stick up on my little ones wall as it has very pretty picture on it.
A booklet about how to enjoy stories with young children
And some leaflets

The second book start pack is given to your child at around two years old; I got mine from my local Sure Start Centre, the pack contained:
A satchel style bag - very much like book bags schoolchildren have
A scribble pad and crayons
Two books - my favourite being the zoo, which is a lift up flaps book.
A fold out leaflet with numbers on - little girls loved this most out of the pack
And some leaflets

The third and final pack is given to children three to four; my little girl was given hers at nursery. The pack contains.
A cardboard treasure chest - my little girl loves this as it has a lift out compartment at the bottom she could hide things in.
Two books - these books are great bedtime stories as a little longer
Activity book, scribble pad and crayons - these are to encourage writing, which my little girl loves.
And some leaflets.

In my local area book, start runs a scheme called book crawl, every time you child takes books out from the library they receive a sticker and when they have four they get a certificate.

Book start also often run parties at my local Sure Start, which includes food, story time and song time.

I think this scheme is a great idea, my parent do not think to buy little ones story books as they think they are too young, but think sharing a book with you child can start from day one.

My children love there packs and are so proud that they have some thing just for them

Summary: a great idea

It's a brilliant idea. We've just had our 2 year old pack.
