“ The Wobbly Plate is a paint your own pottery studio based in Rugby. „
The Wobbly Plate a new and fanastic small buisness based in Rugby, which is on railway terrace, and is next to the car parts shop and opposite the job centre etc, its basically a house that's been converted into an paint your own pottery studio and shop, and although does not look that special from the outside, its a great place for the locals inside.
My family and I have visited on two occasions, once when it first opened a couple of years ago and once more recently when my son and daughter were invited to a birthday party there. I think we paid around about 7 pounds per person when we went, although due to their selection of items you can choose from an egg cup upwards and so the price can match anyone's budget no matter how little or big.
Their studio is a nice family feeling place, and it basically looks like a family dining area, it's very modest in décor and its taste in furniture etc, but for a small family business I would not expect more than this. It comfortably seats up to 20, and I think probably if pushed they could do slightly more than this. The best thing I found are the staff, the two women I met whom were running the store that day were very friendly and warm and terrific with children no matter what age or capability.
When we visited as a family, we went with friends of ours and thier children as well as our own, and although they were expecting us as we had pre booked, they were so welcoming when we arrived. To begin with we all chose what we wanted to paint, and then got to work, which the staff were very helpful at assisting us with. My son loved the fact that they loved his mug and they made a big deal of how fantastic his drawing of a spaceship was...bless him.....flattery gets you everywhere with my son. We never felt rushed even when we had completed our painting, we sat and had a coffee, and refreshments and it really was a very enjoyable afternoon.
We went later in the afternoon, around about three, so we left our mugs there for them to be fired in the kiln, and my friend collected them the next afternoon, although when my children attended the party they did them straight away, so im not exactly sure on how long of a process this is.
I really like this local buisness, its a cheap day out in the area, which is different from your usual swimming, play centre, park, bowling days out which many families in the area have got bored of, or that just be me and my family and friends. Although the buisness is quite new and also very small it has a great reputation within the community and i think will only get stronger in the ongoing years.
They have a huge selection of items for you to choose to paint, when I and my family went we all painted a mug, which we still have to this day for our hot chocolate and when my children went for the party they painted money boxes which were really sweet. But they have many other items such as, plates, bowls to money boxes in a variety of shapes, trinket pots, vases, flower pots, pet bowls and an array of the cutest ceramic creatures from smiley snails, jumping dolphins, doggies, dinosaurs, and loads more.
They also offer a range of other facilities such as birthday parties for children or they can even offer the choice to open in the evening for
Ladies/Mums Night out
Teenager/Adult Birthday Parties
Youth Clubs/ Social Groups
Basically they tell you to either order a takeaway or bring your own food along with a bottle or two of wine and have an alternative fun night out rather than the same old thing. I must admit I'm currently tempted to do this for my birthday with a few friends as none of us really like going out drinking anymore and also it would be nice to do something my Nan came come to, and not feel out of place or too past it.
They are open Tuesdays to Sundays 11 am - 6pm, although to be honest I would always call before, as there a few times when I have walked past in the week taking my little boy to drama or dance class (just round the corner from the Jaides dance studio) and they have been closed, so I think it all may depend on how many bookings they have.
So if you or your children are fond of arts and crafts, then why not pop along and try your hand to painting a mug, plate, dish etc etc.....or you could always do a whole dinner service. You really will not be disapointed and will have a fun time, with some great staff and a great atmosphere.
