Advantages: good range of colours, covers those grey hairs

Disadvantages: drips, drips, and drips

Casting's and I go back along way far too long for comfort! When I first used Casting's it was a unique product being the first of the tone on tone colours to be on the market. Back in those days hair dying was done to re vamp my hair and not as a nesecity to cover up those pesky grey hairs as it is now!

Having dark hair I favoured the plum shade which to be honest gave me a dark purple hue to my hair but what the heck I was young and it looked good to me! Gradually my love affair waivered with Castings and I went onto other dyes such as Country Colours, Movida and a night mare experience with L'Oreals Recital. I also gave Henna a wizz when I went throw a natural phase but after four hours of a dung like mixture on my hair and it did smell kind of rustic too. I found all I had done was conditioned my hair and dyed the few grey hairs I had a brilliant orange colour.

So why did I actually return to Castings? Ok laziness they didn't have the shade I wanted in the Country Colours and I thought Castings would be just as good.

As I opened the familiar box to inspect the contents I did notice some changes, the bottles of dye were the same, the conditioning treatment was there but there was this little tub - wow was my reaction proper gloves! Yes girls finally you can dye your hair without poking your fingers throw the gloves! Castings now supplies you with gloves that are very similar to the ones I use sometimes at work and are excellent! Ok it's only a little thing but it did re sell Castings back to me!

Castings is extremely easy to apply if you are a novice I would suggest a quick look at the instructions prior to commencing just in case!! Basically you have two bottles scew them together and give the bottle a good shake and you are nearly ready to start!

Castings unfortunately is a very runny dye the drip factor is definetely a 10 in my book. So once you have rinsed your hair with water do towel dry it w
ell to get rid of excess moisture as you can do without helping the dye to run.

The bottle of dye has a long nozzle which is great for applying the dye but I do tend to use my gloved fingers to do areas like my hair line due to the dreaded drip factor. the dye should be left on for 25 minutes, but I admit to having left mine on for alot longer than that, ok about 2 hours once when I was on dooyoo without any ill effects. Once I have applied the dye I then don a loverly turban consisting of a Sainsbury's carrier bag and an old towel. One hint do not open the door to stranger in this get up!!

Now as I have said before Castings does drip and does stain skin , furnishings and basically any thing it comes into contact with. So do becareful!! I once had ears that were red for a few days afterwards. Also do rinse throughly after dyeing as I did once manage to turn a pillow case red due to not rinsing properly.

I can only speak for the darker shades but I have found that most are very natural looking ( well apart from the plum!) but they do tend to give a very dark apperance till they start to fade abit normally after the first couple of washes. As for coverage of those grey hairs again a 10! Castings manages to dye them the same colour as the rest of your hair.

As with all tone on tone colourants the results generally last for about 6 weeks and then start to fade out.

Having tried numerous hair dyes I would definetly recommend Castings but just mind out for the dreaded drip factor!!

With me it was hate at first touch. I usually use a rinse (Clairoil's Loving care or L'Oreal's Dedicace if I can't get the other). They catch on my naturally grey streaks and give a lively effect to an otherwise mousy head. Being out of them the saleslady recommended Castings as being the next best thing, very gentle and bound to fade within six weeks like the others, giving no line of demarcation when hair grows. Well that was a down right lie. A ten minute application turned me into a brassy blonde and it took ages to grow out. The only thing that faded was my hope to ever be rid of the effects. It's not too hard to use. Gloves, a plastic cape and plenty of cotton wool within easy reach go a long way to solve the mess of home dies.
