Advantages: Works well

Disadvantages: Smell is not all that great

I never used to use hairspray in the past, thinking of it as sort of an old-lady's product used to keep the blue-rinsed helmet in place! But before a recent girly night out, several of us met up at my place to get ready and one girl who is our "hair guru" came over with all her tools - including GHD straighteners and Elnett hairspray - to make us over! My hair has never looked so good as when she worked her magic on it. I couldn't afford to get the GHD straighteners she had used but I was able to afford the Elnett!

Elnett comes in a tall golden canister with a drawing of a woman with upswept hair in a bouffant-type style on it. I got the Elnett Satin Extra Strength one but they also make Supreme Hold if you want to go even further with this. It costs around £3.50 from Boots which isn't cheap for a hairspray but I've seen worse prices too.

What I do now everyday is straighten my hair with good old Babyliss straighteners and then apply Elnett over the top. The spray comes out from a "micro-diffuser" and is really ultra fine, so you don't have to worry about it building up on only one part of your hair. It really gives good coverage. The smell is quite floral but a bit dusty somehow and definitely old-fashioned. It isn't unpleasant and it does fade quite quickly leaving just a hint of scent on your hair.

You do need to put your palm over your forehead to shield your face from the spray. Don't forget to do this or your eyes will sting and your face will get all sticky - very unpleasant!

This hairspray does give a slightly "crispy" texture to your hair which I find extremely difficult to not touch and run my fingers through to break up. But that defeats the purpose of holding your hair in place so I try to resist. If you do decide you don't like your hair with this on, not to worry as you just need to brush it through and all hint of hold disappears.

I find that Elnett lasts well throughout the day and I don't need to touch it up at work. I definitely don't want to be "that girl" who sprays masses of hairspray on her hair in the work's toilet and fumigates the place for whoever happens to be in there (and we do have one of those where I work!). I guess I'm saying that hairspray seems like it can become addictive so while I do really like this stuff, I'm trying to keep my hairspray habit under control!

Summary: I wish I'd discovered this sooner
