Advantages: Covers grey, reasonable price, easy to use, has an applicator comb
Disadvantages: Stains materials, can be messy, makes my head itch and is full of chemicals
I was unlucky enough to get grey hairs at an early age (19 years old) to start with a braved the odd grey hair but as time passed and they became much more noticeable and were making me look very old I decided it was time to start dying my hair. I thought about it very hard, as I knew there was no going back once I started dying my hair. 10 years later and I am still dying my hair I would stay now that my hair is 85% grey and 15% very dark brown. Over the years I have tried a lot of different dyes some did not cover the grey and some was very difficult to use and messy! I have finally chosen a brand and stuck to it!
L'Oreal Paris excellence crème is the product I have been using for the last 3 years now. The excellence crème has just become even easier to use with the introduction of an appli-comb, which screw onto the lid of the bottle so it can be applied to the hair using the comb rather then my hands!
L'Oreal Paris excellence crème is priced at about £6.50 a box there is a huge range of colours there are 28 colours available but I have only ever seen about 6 colours in the supermarket. The product claims to cover 100% of grey hairs. In my experience the product does cover, grey but grey hairs have a different texture to; I can sometimes tell which ones were grey even though they are dyed.
I find the product very easy to use. There are two lots of instructions one for covering roots and another for dying a whole head of hair. I always dye the whole head as you cannot save any unused dye and it is hard to just get to the roots. The product comes in a box. Inside is a pre-colour treatment, which you rub into your hair before you apply the dye. There is a bottle with developer and a tube of colorant. Simply mix the developer and colorant together in the developer bottle then shake really well. Then change the lid over to the applicator comb and comb through your hair until you have completely cover your hair from root to tip with the cream. Leave on the hair for 30-40 minutes then rinse. The best way to rinse is to get into the shower and let the water run until the hair runs clear. To start with the water will be dark in colour and the colorant comes out the water will get lighter and lighter. Eventually the water will run clean this will take some time and you need to keep your head back as the colorant will sting your eyes and does not taste very good!
There is a little bottle of conditioner to use at a later date. The conditioner is very good and made my hair very shinny. There are also gloves, which do need to be worn when using the dye. I would also recommend wearing old clothes and using an old towel and the dye will stain fabrics! The new applicator comb is great for reducing the mess but it is best to cover anything you are worried about dying in case a dollop drops from your head. I would also wipe and check the area you dyed your hair in half an hour after as the colorant takes a while to show. I have dyed my hair and checked the skin straight after and it has been clean but after the colour has developed, I have found dye that needed wiping off! There is plenty of dye in the bottle I have used this with long and short hair and always found I have had plenty of dye.
The dye covers my hair well I find the product good value and easy to use. The price is also very reasonable. I have recently bought two boxes for £10 in an offer! The product is quite a harsh dye though it has to be to cover grey but it might make your head itch and the dye sometimes makes my eye sting. I put up with this, as I cannot cope with grey hair. I have had comments from people at work after I have dyed my hair that it looks very shinny and healthy.
Overall, I would recommend this product for anyone wanting to cover grey if you have no grey there are hair dyes that are not as aggressive as this one so you could opt for something mild. The product covers grey well is fantastic value for money and is easy to use. However, it will stain fabrics and other things so make sure you prepare the area!
Summary: This even covers my greys! Great product if you need it!
