Advantages: Unusual Shades. Multiple highlight colour.
Disadvantages: Underwhelming result.
My natural hair colour is dark brown but I have been lightening my hair since I was 12 after school bullies made comparisons between me and Wednesday Adams! I have used all makes of bleach products for a 'streaky' effect and also use a blend of colours to lighten or darken strands of hair to make my colour look more natural. This was the latest colour I tried: L'oreal Paris Feria Colour 3D.
This product is a permanant gel colourant which means it will not wash out and will only grow out. I used the shade Caramel Kiss ( Dark Iridescent Blonde) or Shade 72. This shade looks very bright and summery. The final colour result really depends on your original hair colour. This shade is most appropriate for those with light to dark blonde hair. On darker shades it will lighten and add red tones. I would describe the colour depicted on the model and photograph patches on the box as a ginger biscuit blonde. It looks luminous and coppery. On the side of the box it shows photographs of approximate results with each natural shade of hair. Even on darkest brown to black hair the end results are shown as a lighter, redder, warm auburn colour. You can also use this dye on grey hair although the information on the box warns that the result will be very "vibrant".
The outer packaging of the dye contains a lot of information including full ingredients ansafety instructions. The company promise that this dye offers a "multi faceted colour and 3 dimensional shine." They claim that each shade is enhanced with "multiple higlights" which sounds wonderful! They also describe the colour as "light-reflecting".
Inside the box the kit is comprised of:
1 bottle colourant gel
1 bottle developer gel
1 tube aromatic oil
1 tube conditioner
1 pair of gloves
Instruction Leaflet
In the instruction leaflet and also on the box there are big instructions urging customers to conduct a safety test before using this product. This involves putting a patch of dye on your neck and leaving for 48 hours to see if there is no allergic reaction to the product. This is especially important if you have ever had a black henna tattoo.
The gloves are thick and good quality with a powdery inside for easy fit and removal. Once you have your gloves on you can mix the dye. It is very simple to do this: The colourant gel and scented oil are mixed in with the developer gel and the bottle shaken. You must remove the nozzle immediately after shaking to avoid the bottle from bursting!
Application is quite easy. I do tend to use my dyes on selected strands of hair rather than all over. On this occasion I was using it on hair that was mid brown to light brown. There are two options for use. One is based on first time use and the other based on applying the dye if you have used it before. I followed the first instructions. The dye becomes darker on application and will stain skin unless you wipe it off immediately. Development time is 30 minutes after which you rinse your hair and apply some of the conditioner. The conditioner comes in a 44 ml size tube and is meant to last over several washes. Even with long hair I can say that there is enough conditioner to be able to do this.
When my hair was dry I was a little underwhelmed by the results. Where my hair was lighter it now has a warm, metallic hue to it - rather Celtic looking. On darker strands of hair the colour is very subtle but a little warmer with gingery undertones. I would not say that it is a dramatic difference as implied by the packaging on this dye. I also feel that the promises of high shine and bright lights are a little over stated! The aroma left by the conditioner is flowery and feminine and my hair feels surprisingly soft for just having been coloured.
Overall I would say that this dye promises a little more than it delivers! I would award it average marks for colour result and shine result and good marks for ease of application and quality of kit.
Summary: A premanent hair colour by L'oreal Feria.
