Advantages: covers grey good colur result

Disadvantages: see op

I was fed up of having brown hair and wanted to go back to having a little fun with colour before my hair got too grey to do it myself successfully. So on my last shopping trip I found a shade I loved the look of and took it home.

The shade I've chosen is Hot Ginger and claims to be the end of flat colour, multi-faceted so that it shimmers and shines. It is not recommended if you have more than 30% grey hair, if your grey is concentrated in one area, or on hair that is highlighted or bleached.

Inside The Pack

You get 1 bottle of Colourant, 1 applicator bottle containing the developer, 1 bottle of conditioner (to use after colouring your hair) an instruction leaflet and a pair of plastic gloves.

I read through the instructions; you apply this to wet hair, massage it in and wait 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly and then applying conditioner. Easy peasy to do even for me.

So after covering all surfaces around the sink in the bathroom in order to protect them from staining, I put on the plastic gloves. I usually throw them away and wear a pair of rubber gloves, but these were of a much better quality than you normally get in these kits so I thought I would give them a go. They are like the ones you would wear in a food preparation area if that helps you get a better idea. Anyway they were very good, I have long nails and these gloves didn't split or leak at all.

Next mix the colour and the developer together, this is very simple indeed. Undo the cap from the colourant bottle, place the developer bottle over the top, apply pressure and twist until you hear them click into place, then shake to mix them evenly, break off the nozzle tip and it's ready to use. You must use it straight away and never keep any left over mixture in case the bottle bursts.

I set to work and at first it was quite easy, but as I got down the bottle a bit, it got harder and harder to get the
dye out. I didn't want to shake it out, as it would go all over the place. I've made that mistake before in the past and it's a messy business.

The problem is that the bottle is made of quite a hard plastic so it's fairly difficult to squeeze the mixture out carefully. So when I did squeeze the bottle a little too hard it flew out of my hand and across the bathroom spraying the wall with dye as it went! So despite my care and attention to covering things up, I still had a bit of a mad panic to clean up the walls before they stained and left my bathroom looking like a crime scene!

I got the rest of the dye on as best as I could and waited the 30 minutes for it to develop. After rinsing I applied the conditioner (which smells and feels lovely) and then I let my hair dry naturally.

I'm very pleased with the over all result. The colour is exactly like it shows on the box which is more on the red than ginger side and it shines and shimmers beautifully. Its covered up the grey hair I had wonderfully and I love it so much that I will definitely use it again, although I'll probably enlist a bit of help with the application next time.
