Advantages: No Tears and No Tangles

Disadvantages: Expensive and can cause reactions

We have always used Johnsons baby shampoo on my daughter but recently I've started to notice that her hair is becoming increasingly tangled, so I asked our hairdresser if there was any types of conditioners about for youngsters that would solve the problem. She told me L'oreal make a kids shampoo and conditioner.

On my next trip to Tesco I spotted it amongst the shampoos so checked it out. As my daughter is only two I first checked to make sure there was no minimum age recommendations and there wasn't so I duly purchased a bottle at £1.60. It was quite expensive compared to the Tesco own brand at just 38p for the same size bottle but I thought with it being L'oreal it was going to be good.

The L'oreal kids range have 5 different flavours Cheeky Cherry, Tropical Mango, Soothing Lavender, Sunny Orange (all 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner) and Very Berry Strawberry shampoo and Very Berry Strawberry Conditioner. The 250ml bottles are very brightly coloured and are shaped to look like a fish with an eye and scales on the bottle. It states in the bottle "No Tears!" and "No Knots".

I purchased the Cheeky Cherry Shampoo as this is the only one my Tesco branch sells and it does state on the bottle extra gentle 2 in 1. The bottle is bright red with an orange coloured lid. It contains 16 ingredients none of which I have heard of or have any idea what allergies they can cause. On opening the bottle you are greeted with a very strong and sweet smell of Cherries. The shampoo is clear in colour.

We started using the shampoo on my my daughter and it was great. No tears during bath time and it certainly made a difference to the shine of my daughters hair. The main thing was there was no tangles at all even the following day after my daughter had slept. In the mornings was when we used to get the tangles and the tears when trying to comb them out, so I was very pleased how easy it was to comb her hair.

About three weeks after we started using the shampoo I noticed my daughter had developed dandruff and after closer inspection of her skull I could see grey scabby areas all over her scalp, so immediately stopped using it. After using the Johnsons again her scalp went back to normal and the dandruff cleared up.

I checked out the L'oreal kids website (www.lorealparis.co.uk) to see if it mentioned anything about reactions to the shampoo but there was nothing. Eventually I found a telephone number for me to contact them.

I telephoned and got through to customer services and asked them if there was a minimum age recommendation and all they said was that it was not suitable for babies. I then explained to them that my daughter was two and had had a reaction to the shampoo. The customer services lady was very helpful and said that she would file a medical report for me. She asked me about the symptoms and took my name and address. She told me to immediately stop using the shampoo on my daughter which we had already done and offered me either £3.00 in vouchers or a refund of the purchase price paid direct into my bank account. Seeing as I don't use any of the L'oreal range I opted for the payment into my bank account.

A few days later I received a letter from L'oreal confirming my telephone call and stating how sorry they were that I had had problems with their products. It also confirmed that the refund had taken place and they also advised me to take my daughter to the doctors to have her checked out to make sure everything had cleared up.

I have been using the shampoo myself as I hate the thought of wasting anything and it seems to be fine for me although for about the first hour after washing my hair all I can smell is cherries. We have started using the Tesco shampoo on my daughter and touch wood (my head) this seems to be ok on my daughter.

It is such a shame my daughter had the reaction because I was very happy with the condition of her hair when we first started using it but I must say the Tesco shampoo seems to do the job just as well at a fraction of the cost.

Summary: Expensive shampoo that does stop tangles,
