Advantages: Couldn't find any

Disadvantages: Awful colour and difficult application

I'm certainly an amateur when it comes to applying fake tan. I only ever worry about the colour of my legs in the height of summer when I want to wear shorts or a skirt. Therefore every year I go through the same process of reviewing different fake tans before deciding on the one I think it likely to be the easiest to apply and with the best results.

Last year was the turn of L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Spray. It had had some mixed reviews but overall seemed to be easy to apply and was available in a light to medium shade (as my skin is quite pale).

I do exfoliate and moisturise on a regular basis but before I used the product I paid particular attention to any rough areas around my knees and ankles. The instructions on the back of the can say that you should spray about six inches away from your skin in a smooth up and down motion. It then goes on to tell you that you should not rub it into the skin, but to leave it dry naturally.

As an extra precaution (and because I am totally cack handed), my husband volunteered for the spray job. He followed the instructions and quickly sprayed both my legs as the instructions suggested.

The next morning I woke up with the worst fake tan legs I had ever encountered! They were really patchy and the colour was the most awful orange I had ever seen. Baring in mind this was meant to be for pale skin (of which mine is no way the palest) the contrast between the two was dreadful.

Consequently I spent the next hour in the bathroom with a body scrub trying to get rid of the majority of the tan (and probably my own skin!) before putting on a very long skirt to go to work.

Although this is not the most expensive fake tan on the market, it is no way the cheapest either. I have used quite of a lot of this type of product, some costing as little as £4.00/5.00 and have had better results with those.

Summary: Natural it isn't!
