Advantages: Great coverage of local and international stories
Disadvantages: Can be a bit sensationalist especially about property prices
Belfast Telegraph
The Belfast Telegraph is the local paper of Belfast. As a young boy this product was sold at paper stands throughout the city with paper sellers yelling 'Tele Tele'. The paper sellers have all but gone no doubt due to cost cutting but the Tele as its affectionately known it the most popular local paper in the Belfast area being sold in all areas within Belfast.
What is the Belfast Telegraph?
The Belfast Telegraph is a local evening paper for the Belfast Area which is printed on a daily evening. The paper is owned by Independent News and Media. It was first published in Belfast in 1870. The paper is conservative in outlook and in terms of Irish politics it has always been considered to have a more Unionist outlook. That being said it does make very strong efforts to appeal to all sections of the community and in my opinion it seems to be doing a good job of this.
Where to buy and the cost
The cost of the paper is 65 pence and it can be found in all good newsagents in and around the Belfast Area. It's also widely sold by migrant worker at all major traffic junctions in the city centre area.
Overview
The paper provides an excellent balance of local and international news as well as sports. It has various special supplements or nights for instance Monday nights is property night, Tuesday is jobs (medical and education only) and Friday is all other jobs. The paper is printed at the weekend as well under a slightly different name however I for one have never purchased the paper at the weekend so cant really comment.
The paper tends to hunt out local connections to stories and it does this very well. The stories they cover are all topical and done in a very interesting and meaningful way that will appeal to a wide readership. The paper would probably claim to be a broadsheet as opposed to being a red top however over the years I have noticed a distinct move to sensationalist journalism. Perhaps this is a deliberate move to increase readership numbers.
Overall I enjoy reading the Tele and I would usually get a copy of it everyday. It lets me keep up to date with all local and international stories and also has useful section such a property for sale/let, car sales, family notices etc. This paper would be of interest to local and visitor alike and the website which is free carries a great selection of some of their most popular stories.
Summary: A very enjoyable read

- 17/07/09 A tip for anyone in the Queen's Uni area; you can pick up the AM version of the paper for free and the normal edition at a cut price (either 20p or 40p, can't quite remember) if you pop into the student's union. |
