Advantages: Keeps you in touch with events that are local to sussex

Disadvantages: none

The Argus,is one of my favourite newspapers, this is because Brighton was my hometown ,so I like to keep in touch with the news .The Argus does cover news all over Sussex and surrounding areas ,which is also very helpful. Also the Campaigning Newspaper of the year 2oo2,a well deserving title, as the Argus gets involved in issues like opposing incineraters being built in the area ,and human rights stories .

The copy I am looking at this morning has the picture of a pig with his snout in the air,his name *Del boy trotter*,(I like pigs):),
Del boy needs a new home because with his weight at 25 stone ,means he needs another stye.
He according to this article has been dining on Marks and Spencers take-away food .

He is named after the character played by David Jason ,hope he doesnt mind, but this portly pig is a sweetie .

If you want to find this online in the archives the link is:http://www.thisisbrightonandhove.co.uk/brighton __hove/local_life/where_are_they _now/2001-05-05.html

Del Boy usually shares his living space with ponies.
He was rescued as a baby ,but has *eaten*,his owners out of house and home ,with posh nosh:),the article states,
There was a phone number for anyone interested .

He might have another home by now ,they need to put him on a macrobiotic diet!!

Phone 01903-217788 (Mr Elliot Rescue Officer) is trying to get foot and mouth restrictions lifted ,to give him a licence to be moved *.Give him Organic rice and vegetables Mr Elliot!,he will soon lose weight, and chicken ,a wonder food for animals.

This kind of human ,and animal interest story is the trademark of the Argus, this one written by Karen Hoy.
Featured on page 5 is a human rights issue for want of a better description Headline :Planners say no to Stadium on the downs, this is about a dispute over whether a football stadium should be built at Falmer on outskirts of Brighton.

I will update these stories if I ca
n ,but link I have given goes back 4 years ,the Brighton Reference library has some going way back on micro-film.

other features are the Post-box to express readers views an pionts in the post, where queries and comments can be made.

This is a unique Newspaper ,also having articles for sale and personal column towards the back of the paper.
It Has character dont you think?
Last nights argus had several interest stories . Update:
The Headline story on the front page was about an unfair dismissal tribunnal case brought by Janet French office Administration worker for her unfair dismissal .She was unable to work for a period because of an illness called phaeochromocytoma ,one of the major symptoms of this illness is very high blood pressure ,I can have sympathy with this as I suffer this symptom myself.

Her boss apparently had failed to have a discussion with Her or Her doctor about her illness .
The boss felt He had bent over backwards trying to accomodate Mrs French,my thoughts on this are unless you suffer personally with a problem like this you wont really understand.

With high blood pressure you need to keep cool in hot weather, and warm in cold, to quite an extreme degree ,poeple tend to think you are going over the top,but I can assure this is not the case.Overheating can bring on panic attacks,as can extreme cold.

I will add a little about the actual symptoms of above mentioned illness.update:
phaeochromocytoma ,is a rare disoder ,a tumour of the Adrenal Medulla ,giving paroxysymal rises in blood pressure amongst other things ,can be given drug treatment ,or removed by surgery if it is operrable ,Mrs French deseves all the help she can get report dated April the 25th ,she didnt get much compensation a mere 2000 pounds ,I think she deserved more.

Page 3 has a nice Family Story about several generations working as Dustmen ,clocking up 108 years between themas refuse collectors ,a n
oble job ,I feel.I know the Brighton dustmen, pardon the old fashioned description, are very courteous.

I usded to make them a cup of tea, when I lived in Brighton.

This family mentioned ,go back to 1949,when Harold Saunders ,started the family tradition, from Hollingdean dopt, joined by Taffy(now dead)and Peter now in his 70s.

Harold Saunders had 6 of his grandchildren ,take up this service.Read the reporton page 3,with additional happy photos,of the Saunders and Pilbeam families.

Harolds daughter Joan married Frank Pilbeam ,who followed the tradition of the Sauders family6 members have followed in their fathers footsteps.

This was a very enjoyable article,Steve Pilbeam pictured in the article said things have improved lately with re-cycling ,and car boot sales ,making people more conservation minded...this was another article by Karen Hoy.

The star of the front page is about Leo,a black
Labrador who had a fortunate escape after falling 40 feet out of a window,He jumped out while chasing a squirrel.

He was looking out of the window while his master Colin Rowland was working outside,Leo pushed the window open with his nose tried to propel himself into the tree unfortunately he was last seen falling from the 3rd story ,he survived ,he just had bruising and,a cut leg his master thinks he survived because he goes to doggility classes twice a month ,well done Leo!!

I just love to hear animal sucess stories .

On the same page is a small report of the sucessful detonation of two military shell on the sea-bed one mile from seaford headthey were found by a dredger called Arco Dee two miles from Newhaven a Port along the cost from Brighton ,going towards Dover.
This was all done by a controlled explosion.

Then on the same page 7 we have a report of people fleeing a Bingo hall ,because of a fire caused by workmen using a blow-torch .
I think back copies can be obtaine
d there are several contacy numbers .Switchboard number is :01273/544544.email:letters@theargus.co.uk
They do have an online site to see yahoo.
I think i have summed up the argus and it helps keep a community spirit and encourages family ties ,by printing sucess stories like the Dustman one.

Update April 29th:Headline Champions:

This is a special issue covering a very special event Brighton and Hove Albion to day for the second year running ,had a Victory Parade through (Brighton and Hove which now has city status).Police estimated 10,000 people lined the route of this parade.

I listened to most of this on Sussex radio,it was even moving to me (not really a football fan).

The pictures ,on pages 10 and 11 show a sea of blue flags in the area of Kings hoase in Hove.

This march started bear the palace Pier and ended in in this square just mention in Hove.

Following it on the radio I could tell what a festive atmospere there was acompanying this event The Football team were all on the top of a victory bus people cheered and waved large blue and white flags ,and scarves and clapped cheered and sang as the bus drove through the route, some people wore the albion colours.
Kerry Mayo ,Albions longest serving player, was quoted as saying*the turnout was unbelievable, definetly more than when we won Division 3 last year*.

Cyclists followed the bus,and 8we are the champions could be heard was heard amongst others in a mass singalong at the end of the parade.

Queen Victorias statue ,was decorated with an Albion scarf.

Although the atmosphere was jubilant, there is an issue
hanging over the whole event, many of Brighton and Hoves residents want a new Stadium to be built in *Falmer* near Sussex University ,so some people were chanting *we want Falmer*,this application goes before the Council June the 12th ,as this is a country area ,there are mixed feelings about this.

This was a happy family event well worth reading about ,if you are a former Brightonian.
