Advantages: Only 55p (approx.)
Disadvantages: Uninteresting, poorly written, dull, dull, dull
As my boyfriend is from Chorley I have had several opportunities while visiting his parents to read the local paper, and on each occasion I have been left distinctly unimpressed.
The paper, as you would expect for a small town paper, focuses mainly on human interest stories. These stories focus on local people, accidents, events, and other goings on, in and around the Chorley area.
As well as the general day to day stories there are sections conerned with consumer mishaps, readers problems, and complaints by readers about Chorley issues. The sports section is perhaps the best part of the paper, but these are fairly dull and only concern a handful of local teams.
Like with many local rags, a large portion of the paper is made up of advertisements - both commerical and those for locals' own rubbish.
Generally the stories are dull in nature, and are made even less exciting by the mundane writing of the Guardian team. There is no real effort on their part to make the stories interesting, and a distinct lack of any rhetoric merely panders to its target audience - the lowest common denominator. While I understand that there is a need in local papers to dumb down information, this paper is particulalrly poor.
There is one exception to this banal reporting, Karl Holbrook appears to be a competent writer, and his work on a particularly emotional murder case last summer is excellent.
The good news is that you won't waste too much money should you chose to check out the paper, costing only 55p (approx) The Chorley Guardian is not too expensive.
Summary: For the people of Chorley content with mediocrity, but for anyone with half a brain it's no good
