Advantages: Free CD (Sometimes 2), Very informative, Very good discount with a subscription
Disadvantages: Only available at WHSmith, Could be longer!
Having recently transcended into the world of techies?, I felt I needed to get a magazine to make sure I am keeping up with the latest internet related issues, but when I looked at the magazines I was like 'well which one?!' After half an hour or so I decided on .Net (I think I was persuaded by the free CD containing programs worth over £300) and I have been buying it ever since. Every month I'm off to WHSmith to get my .Net mag (which seems to be the only place to stock it unfortunately). There are few magazines that I read from cover to cover but this one I do, I even read the welcome note inside the front cover. I accidentally missed a copy once but it's OK because you can read all the past articles on their website. The things I really like about this magazine include: Free CD's - every month they include a CD (sometimes 2) containing free programs, some examples of which have been Actinic Catalogue, Spy Cleaner, IMS Web Spinner and Command Anti Virus. Some of the free stuff is a bit naff but often worth a look (Hey It's FREE!!). The magazine also includes sections on how to use these programs. There is a help section where people write in with their computer related questions, I have found many an answer to my problems through these pages. As an up and coming web developer I particularly enjoy the web-building section. This is written by professional designers and frequently includes articles on HTML, Flash, actionscript, ecommerce and building web applications. It is always up to date on the latest hot topics, for example the October issue includes a very interesting section on site promotion and search engine submission. Whilst being really useful for web builders, .Net has other information in it that is more generally related to the internet. There is the Net Gamer section where they review games and give you hints and tips, and the Quick Clicks section which contains silly w
ebsites that .Net think are worth a mention for some light relief! The Net Gear section features 'the coolest gadgets and hottest hardwear'. If you subscribe you get a discount and often this includes special offers such as a years free hosting when you take out a subscription. If you are new to web development I would definitely recommend buying this magazine. I myself am fairly new and it has really helped me figure out what's what! Even when I am more experienced I think I will carry on buying it as it keeps you up to date in the world that is internet. On the down side: WHSmith seem to be the only place to sell this magazine, which is not a problem for me as there is one near me, but this may be a pain for others. This magazine contains lots of adverts, mainly for web hosting companies, but these don't really distract too much from the content as they are relevant to the nature of the magazine. I really must get around to subscribing to this magazine! Not only would I get 38% off the price but I just missed an offer where I would have got one years free hosting along with the subscription. Perhaps I'll wait and see what next months offer is. I have to admit I have not bought any other magazines that are in the same category. I have flicked through them in the shop but at a fiver a time none have persuaded me to buy them - I'll stick with my .Net thanks very much!
