CBeebies BBC Weekly
by Jenny_Summers The CBeebies magazine's contents comprise of the magazine itself, some stickers usually a mixture of character stickers and reward stickers for compleating various activities and a toy/small toy set. If this review was being written by my 2 year old he would more than likely be giving it a 5 star glowing review he, like many ... other young children, loves magazines and has a particular soft spot for the CBeebies magazine! It's bright and colourful which really appeals to little'uns and they love the characters that they recognise from their favorite T.V shows and in their opinion the free toys are not the cheap badly made pieces of tat that I consider them to be, but instead a brilliant new addition to their toybox because they always have something to do with a well loved CBeebies character! I was never really a fan of kids magazines after we had wasted money on some pretty poor quality ones and untill a few months ago I had pretty much avoided buying them for my son. That is untill my local newsagent kindly decided to re-arrange the shop and now conviniently places the magazines right next to the milk and bread. The childrens magazines are now perfectly placed to catch his eye as we walk past. Well, once he'd recognised the famillar characters and oggled the free toy it was pretty much game over! I could have tried to explain to him that for the same price we could buy him a book that he would enjoy infinately more and a toy that wouldnt break within hours and end up in the bin, but at 2 was not going to see the logic in my reasoning and he certainly would not have been happy about having to put back his shiny new CBeebies magazine, covered in pictures of all his favorite characters, so having nver tried the CBeebies magazine, I decided to give it a try and give magazines in general another go. Will absolutely loves books and reading features heavily in his daily routine, particularly before bedtime, so a magazine seemed like a good purchase considering they all contain at least one or two stories, well, of my big gripes with magazines previously, had been that the stories in the magazines always seemed so poorly written and if I'm spending nearly 3 pounds on something I'd much rather in all honesty that it be books, books he can keep and we can read over and over again, magazines tended to end up in the bin well before the next issue even made it to the shelves. The same I found could not be said of the stories in the CBeebies magazine, some are even such good quality that I've got a folder into which I put the story pages from the mag that I've laminated and keep to re-read long after the magazine itself has been binned! For the amount you pay you do get a fair bit (see content list above) and the toys are not always tat, Will is very energetic and toys in my house seem to take quite a beating, magazine toys in particular dont tend to survive being taken on the trampoline and they are likely to shatter into sharp pieces if trodden on, CBeebies magazine toys seem to be a little more robust but are still by no means going to be something that lasts a particularly long time. It does really annoy me that they insist on cellotaping the free toy to the front of the magazine because it makes it impossible to get it off without ruining the front cover and so from the minute you open it the magazine is already looking shabby! But the magazine isnt made to last so I suppose it doesnt really matter. I suppose your opinion on this magazine would be largely based on whether or not you set out to your local shop with the intention of picking up a kids magazine, or if you were just trying to grab a few quick bits and not make too many unnecessary purchases because it's nearly pay day and you're skint! If you're in the first group, the value for money, familiar characters, bright and bold text and good selection of both stories and activities would make the CBeebies magazine a great purchase! CBeebies BBC Weekly
by firasha Out of all the magazines available for the preschool age range I normally try to steer my boys towards the Cbeebies magazines as I find they tend to be the best option, especially the special themed editions but these normal 'weekly' ones are also pretty good. The content is all based on the shows from the very popular young ... children's channel 'Cbeebies' which is aimed at ages up to 6 or 7. I find the magazine is perfect for my 3 year old but I do think children upto 5 or 6 would definitely still be okay with it as it does have a lot of activities to complete. It is also good for younger children, as I used to get it for my eldest since he was under 2 years old - but they will not be able to complete all the activities at that age and may use it more for colouring, sticking the stickers randomly and just enjoying the pictures and stories. For my 3 year old I find it really good for learning maths and writing as a lot of the activities seem to be literacy and numeracy based, and it makes the learning into something fun so they actually see it as a treat rather than a chore because it is based on all their favourite characters. Alphablocks tend to be especially good for learning. It always comes with plenty of stickers, which make up part of the activities. Sometimes it also has reward charts or posters - we recently had one with a counting poster attached. It also always has colouring pages and stories. The quality of the paper is quite good and the cover has a glossy texture. Overall it has a much better look than many of the other magazines you come across in newsagents which can be a bit flimsy! I find the free gifts are better than ones from a lot of other magazines (especially the previously mentioned flimsy ones!), although admittedly sometimes the gifts do break so it depends on the week whether you get a good one or not but we have had some really good free gifts from the cbeebies magazines which have lasted very well and make the magazine more than worth the 2.99 when you think that you are getting a full magazine of activities, sticker and stories as well as the free gifts. However the monthly special themed cbeebies magazines are usually the best ones for the free gifts - which are absolutely brilliant, I have seen the free gifts from those even going for loads on ebay (eg mr tumble spotty bag, mr tumble doll) as they are quite rare since you can only get them from the magazine and then once they are gone they are gone Overall I find this a really good magazine for young children, with loads of learning involved as well as fun. I always rather my boys get this than any other although sometimes they want to go for Thomas just because of the character but when they get this one I find they really enjoy it more as there is more to do in it and it lasts longer before it is all finished up. There are always new shows coming out on cbeebies or old shows being rotated so there is plenty of variety in the magazines too, because of different characters being featured at different times. Sometimes I keep a few of the old magazines after they have finished with them, if they are not in too much of a scribbled or scruffled condition, then after a few months they take them back out and have another look at them and they do enjoy that so we really get the value for money out of it! I would recommend this magazine. Read the complete review |

CBeebies BBC Weekly
by beccyrasooly I have to confess i havent actually been one to buy magazines for my children solely because they have been too young. However for an easter treat i bought my son the cbeebies bumper easter edition for £2.25. I have to say i was quite impressed with the contents and it is very educational. Every page is very bright and ... attractive. This particular issue came with a little easter craft set, to make a chick, an easter basket and 2 easter cards. The only downside is they didnt include glue. Fine as we had some but a child would be disappointed if you didnt already have some at home! The next part that kept my son (almost 4 years) entertained for a good while was the stickers. There are a page of stickers which a few good on selected pages. Children have to find where they go to complete pictures and puzzles with the stickers. The magazine is aimed at pre schoolers and encourages them to write count colour draw spot the difference etc. It also contained a reward chart and stickers a counting poster. Inside the magazine are further activities to cut out and make things but with these you need more of your own resources. For example to make timmy and yabba from timmy time you would need glue, toilet roll tube cotton wool and colours/paints. I wouldnt buy this weekly as personally i think its a lot for a preschoolers magazine to spend £11 every 4 weeks. But i would pick it up again as a treat once in a while or to keep the kids entertained if we were going somewhere Read the complete review |
