When I was young there was nothing I wanted more for entertainment then to play my 'video games'. Summers I would spend at home conquering the games on my 'Sega Master System'. Books really weren't my thing at this age and the only time I ever enjoyed a book was when I had to read it at school.
Then at A-level English Literature I was made to study other books. Strangely I enjoyed these books a lot more then any others. I realised that this was because I could relate to the characters in these books and because the stories were more realistic. Because of these books I soon began reading more and more books, fascinated with the different styles and different stories.
Now many people may think that turning off the TV is the best way to get kids to read. As I see it that is not the case. If ever my mother turned off the TV all I would do is go out and see my friends or do something else at home. Turning off the TV will simply leave you with resentful and probably stubborn children.
I suggest that if you want children to start reading then you as the parent should read them creative and exciting stories, such as 'Lord of the Rings' at a young age.
You should remember also that if you want to encourage your children to read then you should be reading as well. You should never expect a child to do something that you don't do yourself.
If you want children at school to be inspired to read then perhaps you should encourage them to study something like 'The Catcher In The Rye' so that they can relate to the character and feel inspired to read some more.
Teachers should make reading more fun and easier on the students. Stopping every now and then to explain the scene or maybes joke about the situation the character is in, will make learning more fun and a lot easier for the students.

So like my title says, all we need do to help children read is inspire them.
