Advantages: Weekly
Disadvantages: Adverts, Not enough content
I recently took up photography again and felt that it would a good idea to get myself a subscription for a recognized photography magazine. As I had seen quite a few older editions of AP it seemed a good one to go for, as well as the fact that it was a weekly publication. Opening the first edition that came through my letterbox I was, therefore, hoping to be entertained and educated. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Whilst I understand the need for advertising revenue to keep any publication afloat, it seemed to me that there was about 15% coverage of articles and gear guides whilst the majority of the magazine was given over to advertising. Now, obviously, adverts are a good thing in this type of magazine as they give us a good idea to current prices and special offers etc. It was just the huge volume of them that concerned me. Having said all that, the few articles that are actually there are well written and informative. I guess I was looking more along the lines of “how to do” type sections, which seem missing to me. In summary, I am left wondering whether to switch my subscription to another periodical, such as practical photography where I may well get what I was hoping for and slightly less adverts.

Fishbulb - 14/08/02 Go into your local WHSmith - they usually have the best selection of these mags and look at a few. I sometimes get Digital Photography and it's brilliant (but obviously for digital cameras) it has projects and tips and lots of articles in it! |
