Advantages: Barney, good teaching aid, gives a different way to spend time with your child
Disadvantages: Cashes in on characters popularity. Very purple!!
Now I have the honour, of being Mum to one of Barney the Dinosaurs biggest fans. We have toys, we have books and videos, and , yes we also have the comic. Most childrens comics these days seem to follow the same format, so there is only quality of content that seperates them. In my opinion the Barney comic does score well. The main theme throughout this, is of course Barney and his friends. Which I will say can become wearing for parents, who are beginning to hate the colour purple. And a word of warning, there is a pulll out picture in the centre of each, so your nice wallpaper soon gets lost. Mind you, if you don't like the wallpaper you may see this as a blessing! The stories all have a positive theme, and re-enforce the good aspects of life and have a strong emphasis on being friends with all and doing things the right way. The illustrations are well done and brightly coloured with large print text. Often a central theme runs throughout the whole comic. As an example one issue had the theme of school, so all stories and rhymes were school related. The counting section was pictures of satchels, and paintboxes, and they had a two-fold purpose as well as counting them, they could all be coloured in. Often there is a large picture for the children to look at, and then questions for the children to answer such as, where is the....? How any ......are there? There is also a great pull out worbook section for the older ones, which is compatible with the national curriculm. If your little one draws endless pictures of Barney and you have no room left on the fridge, but you can't let them see you throw them away, the the Barney comic offers the best solution! Put them all in a big envelope and send them in, they might make it into the Scrapbook Section, where they print the childrens artwork. Having bought this one regularly for a while now, I a quite pleased. As with any of these things, they are
cashing in on a characters popularity with children, but there are any worse ways to do it, and at least your child can benefit fro the things it teaches. It also provides another way for you to help your child learn, if you will sit with them, read to them and share it with them
