Advantages: Well displayed, Well Organised, Great Recipes

Disadvantages: None

I am a Good Food Magazine subscriber, which either tells you I’m a middle aged housewife or a cook with no imagination if you believe some of the other reviewers, I am neither. I am young, I love cooking and I love browsing at cookery books and magazines.

Good Food magazine always has a large number of beautifully photographed recipes per issue unlike some of the supermarket equivalents. They’re well set out with a contents page in each issue handily organised into courses, (poultry, vegetarian etc.) There are running articles in each issue. For a while, they ran a very interesting World Cuisine series, with unusual recipes from each country (rather than your typical tourist fare). They also collect recipes into sections for example July had strawberry section. (I tried the chocolate strawberry Pavlova on the front cover, it was easy and delicious.) Each recipe is tested by subscribers who add their comments to them. Every recipe also has a difficulty rating, e.g. “Easy”, “Straightforward” etc.

One of the best aspects of the magazine is they use seasonal produce for their dishes. Seasonality has been lost in the supermarket culture and it is nice that Good Food is reviving it. Not only does seasonal produce taste better, it’s cheaper. They also have a table every month detailing what fruit and veg are coming into season, what is at its peak and what’s nearing the end of the crop, very useful.

A new feature is a cookbook review by the editor Orlando. Each month he tests a recipe book, attempting dishes, giving honest (not always favourable) reviews and a recipe to try from the text. A much cheaper way to find out if something is worth buying. A bit like dooyoo really.

One of the main reasons I started buying the magazine is all the recipes (apart from those off TV) are calorie counted which is really useful if you’re trying to control your weight (assuming you pi
ck a low calorie dish!)

I agree - it's a great magazine! You're not the only 'younger' person to buy it, either - I regularly 'borrow' a friend's copy! Good op.
