Advantages: A VERY interesting read...
Disadvantages: ...which is bound to upset a few people
If you want attention in life you can do a number of things. You can dress in such a flamboyant way in which only a blind person could not notice. You and your partner could have sex on a roundabout in broad daylight. Or, costing less money than the former and at lesser risk of being arrested than the later you could purchase a copy of Bizarre magazine. Picture the scene. Me and a few mates face a long, boring train ride, and so we need our own little form of entertainment just to keep us going, even though with the amount we talk its really quite pointless. Some have CDs, others a newspaper or a magazine, I also opt for the magazine. It was not long before someone noticed it. ‘Oh god that’s disgusting!’ they cried out in disbelief, I looked up from reading a little segment on a woman to man sex change operation (complete with the pictures) and mocked shocked disbelief. This got the attention of a few others and soon everyone was wanting to have a look at the magazine, each time giving it up with a truly disgusted look on their face, one of them even said they didn’t know how this can be sold. So why, then, had this magazine caused a stir? Well let’s view its content (and I’m basing this on Issue 45). This issue contained Part 2 of ‘Bizarre Extreme’ and it contained the following; A large picture of a satanic ritual, picturing some black nuns, shall we say, relieving themselves for the Dark Prince. The above mentioned sex change operation A picture of a man with his face being eaten away by Leprosy A truly disturbing murder file, telling the tale of a young prostitute who was beaten up, humiliated, killed then cooked. Also involving Hello Kitty. You’re still reading? Ah good. Now I must say that when they say Extreme they mean extreme, a normal issue of Bizarre doesn’t go that far into t
he nether regions of bad taste. But they come close. Bizarre is not, in any way shape or form a magazine for the faint of heart or those who are easily offended. Nor is it, despite the half naked women that appear on the front cover, a typical ‘lads mag’, it goes far, far further to bring you news of some of the most unbelievable but true stories around the world. So apart from the Extreme content what is in a normal issue of Bizarre? Well each magazine has a main ‘theme’. In recent months it has been Bodies (Issue 44) which look at things like tattoos to people who are turned on by amputees. Recently (Issue 46) the theme was dedicated to Weird UK, writing about Car Park sex to some weird hotels. The latest issue (47) is Nature, involving the more interesting gardens and how to grow your own drugs. Besides the main theme there are other regular sections. A firm favourite of mine is the Murder File. The murders in here are not the kind you hear on Crimewatch; these are some of the most despicable, disgusting and distasteful ones you may ever wish to read about. At the back of the magazine there is the review section which picks out some of the best suited books, TV programmes and movies that will suit Bizarre readers. At the front is the Bulletin section, telling stories from around the world and also advertising some pretty unique things you can buy online (Devil Rubber Ducky's anyone?). It’s an interesting read I can tell you. Personally I always love to try and find out things that are there to shock. Nothing else is good enough. My shock threshold is pretty high, I’ve watched too many episodes of Jerry Springer to be shocked by much these days, but there will always be something in this magazine that will. By doing that it deserves 5 stars on its own merit. However it has to be readable was well as shocking to make up a good magazine and it needs to be wo
rth the £2.95 it costs you. Luckily the articles are well written. Most of the time it’s done with humour but other times the tone will change to suit the mood (I can tell you humour is long gone in the Murder Files). On average the magazine is about 135 pages long and, rather pleasingly, there doesn’t seem that many adverts, indeed there are next to none in the middle of the magazine. There is also a lot of stuff to read through, so as well as being interesting it will while away the long, boring hours you may have to spend on trains (or not if your waiting for it to come). So downsides? To me there are practically none, each magazine is diverse with each issue and is fun to read. Others wont see it that way. They will find this disgusting. They’ll think its in total bad taste. Which it truly is. But if you like stuff like that then this is the place to read it from. I’m actually surprised The Daily Mail haven’t organised a ‘BAN THIS SICK FILTH’ campaign as they usually do. Bizarre is a unique magazine and make no mistake. Let taste go out the window and have an open mind while you read this and you’ll have fun and even learn something. For example after reading Bizarre I found that people get turned on by having their eyes licked. Bizarre? Oh yes. BIZARRE IS Shocking Full in content Fun to read BIZARRE IS NOT For the close minded FHM Going to suit everyone’s taste
