Advantages: Pages full of good reads
Disadvantages: Not for the faint-hearted
I don't like women's magazines. In fact I hate them. They bore me to tears with their obsessive patronage of the beauty, fashion and diet industry. You have to pan through a lot of silt before you find any gold. I love Bizarre magazine though. Its actually my husband that buys it and has to hang around like a puppy-dog waiting for its walkies whilst I devour its contents. If you buy, steal or borrow a copy the first thing you must do is prepare to have your eyes opened, to be shocked. The letters page offers a bottle of absinthe to the writer of the best letter published and if you have a question to ask rather than a point to make simply "Ask Bizarre". They give away a "syringe" pen if you get published in this section. One question of note put to the magazine recently was "can a man be born with 2 penises?" Apparantly this is so, and a picture is provided to illustrate the point. Not to be outdone by conventional mags, Bizarre also features a problem page, Miss Kitty is who you should write to if you need to check up on the normality of those odd habits you display in the bedroom. The Bizarre gallery of full colour, full page, full shock pics is one of the best examples of photo-journalism that I have ever seen. Be warned some of the photographs you see here are quite disturbing (as in the rest of the mag) others are simply mind-boggling. Shiite Muslim men slashing their own heads with swords have to be seen to be believed. The next several pages are taken up by Bizarre bulletins. A veritable mish-mash of snippets on any number of bizzarre matters, from bondage teddies to surrealist art. We are moving into advert territory now. Please don't groan and complain, they are often as fascinating as the magazine itself. The bulk of the magazine covers a huge range of topics from drugs to devi
l worship, sex and death. You even get a travelog, 24 hours in a particular city, pointing out all the things and places tourists really should avoid but make the whole experience of a weekend away that much more enjoyable. Book, film, video and computer stuff reviews abound and all with a slant on the bizarre and unusual. And finally, the sealed section, nothing very exciting I'm afraid unless you really want endless lists of adult chat line numbers and dodgily dubbed dutch videos etc. I find the fact that its a sealed section bizarre in itself, its not as if the rest of the magazine shies away from these subjects, but that really is my only problem, for want of a better word, with the whole publication. Bizarre is a no-holds-barred magazine packed with the bizarre, the insane and the downright stomach churning....an assault on the senses and a bloody good read!

pontecaille - 16/07/01 I hate women mags as well but I used to buy a mag called "New Look", OK full of naked women but excellent for critics, reports from all over the world, sensational images and disturbing photos...
Bizarra seems to b my cup of tea.
Thx for the nice op.
